This is a one-year course aimed at school leavers who wish to pursue a career within the Dog Grooming sector. It is designed to help build knowledge and understanding, while also developing your work-based skills. This qualification will give you the basis to start working within the Dog Grooming environment as an assistant.
You will need English and Maths GCSEs at Grade 3/D or above, or be prepared to re-sit them. You will also undertake a formal interview and complete a medical form. You will need to obtain a dog grooming placement to get a place on the course.
There are different units to complete, which involve both practical and theory aspects. This is a two-day course held within the college. You will learn how to:
• Prepare and groom dogs prior to bathing
• Bathe and clean dogs
• Control and restrain animals
• Clean and maintain equipment
• Dry dogs to prepare for styling
• Trim a dog’s coat
• Maintain cleanliness and bio-security of the Animal Environment
Students must have a placement with a dog-care business. The course involves one theory day in college per week and 1-2 days in placement, depending on whether students are resitting GCSEs.
Visits will be arranged to places such as Chester Zoo, Birmingham Dogs’ Home, Crufts, Guide Dogs for the Blind, The Natural History Museum, and Drayton Manor Park and Zoo.
Students are assessed with one online exam, written assessments, assignments and practical observations.
Students can go on to study for a Certificate/Diploma for Professional Dog Grooming Stylists or Animal Management Level 3. Students can also go into employment in dog grooming.
