Details of Standard The following Standard reflects employers’ requirements for the skills, knowledge and behaviours expected from someone to be competent in the job role. Core Occupational Profile Engineering technicians in the aerospace, aviation, automotive, maritime defence and wider advanced manufacturing and engineering sector are predominantly involved in highly skilled, complex work and must, as a minimum, be able to:

Engineering technicians take responsibility for the quality and accuracy of the work they undertake within the limits of their personal authority. They also need to be able to demonstrate a core set of behaviours in order to be competent in their job role, and complement wider business strategy and development. This will enable them to support their long-term career development. Engineered and manufactured products and systems that engineering technicians work on could involve mechanical, electrical, electronic, electromechanical and fluid power components/systems.

Course requirements

To apply for this Level 3 Engineering Machinist Engineering Technician Apprenticeship Standard, you must have Maths Grade 4 and English Grade 4.

All apprentices will be required to achieve as a minimum:

  • Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence)
  • Level 2 Diploma in Machining (Foundation Knowledge)
  • Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence) - Machining
  • Level 3 Diploma in Machining (Development Knowledge)

Level 2 and/or Level 3 Technical Knowledge Qualifications. A grade of pass, merit or distinction will be applied to the knowledge qualifications of the Apprenticeship b) Level 2 Competency (Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours) will be assessed and verified in a sheltered/realistic environment with the Level 3 Competency (Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours) assessed and verified in the workplace with both qualifications using a variety of assessment methods including observation of performance and organisation job/work records/log books.

Apprentices will be assessed on a continuous basis with the final pieces of performance evidence accumulated typically during the last six months. On completion, a binary grade will be awarded for the competency qualifications. These will not contribute to the overall apprenticeship grade c) See Section E1 for the mandated qualification requirements for each occupational pathway.

On successful completion of the Level 3 Engineering Machinist Engineering Technician Apprenticeship Standard, you could go into higher education, or progress onto one of the following career routes:

  • Aerospace Manufacturing Electrical / Mechanical & Systems Fitter
  • Aircraft Maintenance Fitter/Technician (Fixed & Rotary Wing)
  • Airworthiness, Planning, Quality & Safety Technician
