This course is aimed at 16-18 year-olds who have a passion for sport, fitness and personal training. It combines theory and practical experience for you to work with athletes and exercise professionals in the health and fitness industry.
You will need four GCSEs at Grade 4/C or above, including English and Maths, or a Level 2 qualification (Merit or Distinction) in a related subject. You will be expected to attend an interview, as well as have an active interest in the health and fitness environment.
This course combines classroom and practical based sessions to develop the knowledge required to understand the key principles of health, physical activity and exercise. You will be expected to explore health screening techniques, and to develop your knowledge and understanding of fitness related equipment.
1st Year - BTEC National Diploma in Sport and Fitness
There are seven internally assessed mandatory units. You will have to achieve a pass or above in all units to achieve your qualification.
2nd Year - BTEC National Extended Diploma in Sport, Fitness and Personal Training
There are eight internally assessed mandatory units, and four optional. You will have to achieve a pass or above in all units to achieve your qualification.
Successful completion of the two-year course is the equivalent to three A Levels. You will also have the opportunity to complete 30 hours of industry related work experience as part of your study programme.
You will have the opportunity to visit various health and fitness facilities to enhance both theoretical and practical work. You will also have the chance to attend several trips, e.g. Arnold Sports Festival UK, BodyPower Expo.
There will be a variety of theory-based assessments, including written assignments, presentations and training plans. You will also complete various practical-based assessments in which you will demonstrate your ability to instruct clients in the health and fitness environment.
Successful completion of this course will allow you to progress into higher-education sport related degree programmes, or enable entry to an apprenticeship or employment in the health and fitness industry.
You are also eligible to apply for professional accreditation with the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) and the Chartered Institute of Management for Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA).
