Today we are celebrating Fashion student Reanna – one of our Sandwell College Learner of the Month winners – who was presented with her award by The Rt Hon. the Lord Spellar. and CEO & Principal Lisa Capper MBE for her creativity, originality and strong conceptual thinking.
Level 3 student Reanna has chosen the distinctive Silence in Symphony theme for her final major Fashion project, exploring the relationship between the deaf community and its connection to music and opera performance.
Inspired by personal experiences and a desire to deepen her understanding, Reanna carried out detailed research into how performances such as The Phantom of the Opera are experienced with their hidden symbolism.
Reanna said: “I started learning sign language to communicate with a member of staff in a charity shop I go to for vintage clothing. I’ve also researched classical music, as it can be a forgotten about genre, and especially Beethoven, who lost his hearing but was one of the best performers of his time. I then connected the two elements in my designs to bring awareness of the deaf community.”
Reanna is now bringing this research together into a final collection, creating fashion garments including a piano keyboard design skirt featuring sign language, and a promotional fashion magazine, demonstrating both her creativity and commitment to her subject.
