This Chartered Management Institute course is for adult learners who are practising or aspiring senior managers and directors working across a range of organisations in the private, public and third sectors. Unemployed learners with appropriate prior work experience and/or qualifications are also welcome to apply.

Learners who successfully achieve all four units of the course, and who have three plus years’ management and leadership experience at middle/operational manager level or above by the time they complete the course, can be assessed for the prestigious Chartered Manager (CMgr) status* – an internationally recognised accreditation and the gold standard of excellence in management and leadership. According to the latest CMI research (2024), the average pay rise of a manager as a result of becoming Chartered is £13k.

The course is delivered fully online with ‘real-time’ interactive classes taking place on Wednesdays, 6 – 9 pm, using the Teams video conferencing platform. Online, on-demand learning materials are available 24/7 and are accessible by both PCs and mobile devices.

All learners are given FREE professional membership of the CMI, which includes access to a range of CMI products and services to support them throughout the qualification and later as they progress in their career.

*subject to additional £150 fee

A minimum of a Level 5 CMI Extended Diploma in Management and Leadership or equivalent qualification (e.g. HND/FdA/BA/BSc in Management).
However, mature applicants (over 21 years) with relevant work experience (paid and/or unpaid) may be able to join the course in lieu of formal qualifications, subject to satisfactory performance at a selection interview.

Learners on this course will develop their professional strategic leadership and management abilities, with an emphasis on acquiring the knowledge, skills and behaviours to deliver impact, behave ethically and demonstrate a commitment to continual learning and development.

You will study four units:

  1. Strategic Leadership: this unit equips learners with an in-depth understanding of strategic leadership within an organisational context. The unit focuses on the leader’s ability to respond creatively to complex organisational challenges and understand how to set and deliver sustainable strategic goals.
  2. Leading and Developing People to Optimise Performance: this unit develops in learners an in-depth understanding of how to effectively lead and develop people. Learners will have the opportunity to propose a leadership and development strategy.
  3. Developing Organisational Strategy: this unit enables learners to develop and influence an organisation’s strategic direction through the development of a meaningful strategy. Learners will have the opportunity to develop an organisational strategy to achieve a business goal.
  4. Leading Strategic Change: this unit focuses on how to understand the scope, context and complexity of leading strategic change. Learners will have the opportunity to develop a proposal to lead a strategic change.

Each learner automatically becomes a CMI member, gaining access to numerous benefits, including global networking opportunities, which significantly enhance their employment and career development prospects.

All learners have access to CMI’s Career Development Centre (CDC), which provides tailored cutting-edge CPD and career resources free of charge. Through the CDC, learners can use management diagnostic tools, receive personalised development plans, get instant CV and interview feedback and build skills with expert advice videos and interactive e-learning.

All learners have the opportunity to connect with experienced managers and leaders for career guidance and support with improving their management and leadership skills, free of charge via the CMI Mentoring scheme. These mentoring opportunities provide learners with a learning experience which elevates knowledge-sharing to a practical level.

Each unit is assessed by one written assignment of approximately 3,500 – 4,500 words. Learners are supported with assignment completion via structured assignment workshops. Learners are allowed three attempts at each assignment.

Progression opportunities include moving on to other CMI Level 7 qualifications, for example ‘topping-up’ to a CMI Level 7 Extended Diploma in Strategic Management and Leadership Practice or undertaking a CMI Level 7 Certificate/Diploma in Leadership Coaching and Mentoring.

Subject to having senior management experience, learners may be able to progress on to a CMI Level 8 Strategic Direction and Leadership course (equivalent to a Doctorate in Management), or alternatively a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) or a Masters Degree in Management and Leadership.

Learners who are aspiring to work in a senior management role may be able to progress to jobs such as:
• Senior Manager
• Director
• CEO

You may also further your ongoing personal and professional development by applying for full membership (MCMI) or even Chartered Membership of the CMI (CMgr) – subject to meeting CMI eligibility criteria.
