This practical and career-focused course is designed for aspiring and early-stage managers who want to build the confidence, knowledge and skills to lead effectively in the workplace. It’s ideal for adult learners who have some first line management or team leadership experience, or who aspire to become a first line manager or team leader in the future. Learners studying these courses are usually employed and work in a variety of first line manager/team leader/supervisor roles in a range of organisations across the private, public and third sectors. Unemployed learners with appropriate prior work experience and/or qualifications are also welcome to apply.

Duration: 12 weeks – one, three-hour evening class per week. The course is delivered fully online with ‘real-time’ interactive classes taking place on Thursdays, 6 – 9pm, using the Zoom video conferencing platform.

Cost: £600 in total. However, this course is fully funded for WMCA residents who fit the minimum entry criteria.

Resources: Online, on-demand learning materials are available 24/7 and are accessible by both PCs and mobile devices. All learners are given FREE professional membership of the CMI, which includes access to a range of CMI products and services to support them throughout the qualification and later as they progress in their career.

A minimum of five GCSEs at grade C or above, including English or equivalent qualifications.
However, mature applicants (over 21 years) with relevant work experience (paid and/or unpaid) may be able to join the course in lieu of formal qualifications, subject to satisfactory performance at a selection interview.

Learners will study two units:

1. Organisational Awareness for First Line Managers: on successful completion of this unit, learners will understand the role of an organisation’s strategic business plan and how they can contribute to an organisation’s success.

2. Approaches to Managing and Leading People and Teams: on successful completion of this unit, learners will understand management and leadership theories and styles and the practical methods used to lead people and teams with impact.

Each learner automatically becomes a CMI member, gaining access to numerous benefits, including global networking opportunities, which significantly enhance their employment and career development prospects.

All learners have access to CMI’s Career Development Centre (CDC), which provides tailored cutting-edge CPD and career resources free of charge. Through the CDC, learners can use management diagnostic tools, receive personalised development plans, get instant CV and interview feedback and build skills with expert advice videos and interactive e-learning.

All learners have the opportunity to connect with experienced managers and leaders for career guidance and support with improving their management and leadership skills, free of charge via the CMI Mentoring scheme. These mentoring opportunities provide learners with a learning experience which elevates knowledge-sharing to a practical level.

Each unit is assessed by one written assignment of approximately 2,000-2,500 words. Learners are supported with assignment completion via structured assignment workshops. Learners are allowed three attempts at each assignment.

Progression opportunities include moving on to other CMI Level 3 qualifications, for example ‘topping-up’ to a full CMI Level 3 Diploma in First Line Management and Leadership.

Learners who are aspiring to work in a management role may be able to progress to jobs such as:
• First Line Manager
• Team Leader
• Supervisor
• Project Officer
• Shift Manager
• Foreperson
