GCSE Success at Sandwell College

Sandwell College students are celebrating today (21st August) after receiving their Maths and English GCSE re-sit results.

With the increasing importance of literacy and numeracy skills for many roles and occupations, each year students who have not managed to achieve a high-grade pass (4 or above) at school are given a chance to re-take these important examinations. Following today’s success many of these students will now progress to a brighter future and the next stage of their education, whether that is in further or higher education, into an Apprenticeship or take those first steps in their early-stage career.

GCSE English and Maths re-sits have also been a success for the College’s adult learners who are wanting to progress in the workplace, those who may have missed the chance to go to university and want to study at degree level, and those who have studied for personal development to improve their English and maths skills or to help their children at school.

One of those students celebrating today is Grace Glover got grade 5 in English. She’s studying Level 3 Health & Social Care and recently gained Distinction, with aspirations to move into the singing therapy sector. She said: “I got told I was going to fail at school because I’m neuro-divorce, so this means so much.”

Shay Murphy is now off to Birmingham City University to study Architecture after gaining a grade 4 in GCSE Maths. It was third time lucky for the Level 3 Art & Design student.

Alaa Abuobayda is an aspiring doctor. After moving to the UK from Malaysia just a year ago Alaa has gained a grade 9 in Chemistry, two grade 8s in Maths and Biology, a 6 in English Literature and a 5 in English Language on our Access to A Levels programme. “No school would take me so this is amazing.”

Selma Ahmed is an adult learner and achieved an 8 and is one step closer to becoming a teacher. She said: “I’m over the moon with my result, I can’t quite believe it. I’m a busy mother, with lots of distractions, so to achieve my Maths is a great feeling for me. I have big plans to get into teaching and I’m one step closer to achieving this with Sandwell College.”

Lisa Capper MBE, Principal and CEO of The Sandwell Colleges, said:

Our students come to us with an ambition to get on with their education towards great careers, university or apprenticeships. In order to do this, they need to achieve a high-grade pass in English and/or maths GCSE.

“Sandwell College learners who took their GCSE English and maths exams this summer have achieved excellent results with more students than ever before passing their exams… Their success is testament to their hard work and commitment. We are delighted with the progress they have made during their studies, supported by our talented teaching and support colleagues.”
