Journey To Journalism With BBC

We were delighted to welcome Alex Homer and Sukhi Nagra from the BBC to Sandwell College to share their insights into the fast-paced and ever-evolving world of journalism as part of Careers Week 2025.

Students had the opportunity to explore the skills and career pathways that journalism offers, diving into key topics such as:
– What journalists do behind the scenes and how stories are uncovered
– The variety of journalism – from sports and celebrity interviews to crime scenes, travel writing, and community reporting
– How a report comes together – from idea to broadcast
– The importance of increasing diversity in journalism and opening doors to new talent
– The role of the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) qualification in kickstarting a journalism career

Sukhi also shared opportunities available for an apprenticeship at the BBC, giving students invaluable advice on how to get their foot in the door of this dynamic industry.

By providing experiences like this, we’re helping students develop the storytelling, research, and communication skills that will prepare them for careers in journalism, media, and beyond.
