It helps you understand what makes good quality childcare. The course covers a diverse range of job roles and occupational areas including early years and social care, so you'll develop the skills you need for your career.

Course requirements

You’ll need GCSE Maths and English at Grade 3/D or above. We interview all applicants to make sure the course is right for them. You’ll also need a DBS check to complete work placements as part of your course.

The course teaches the theory and practice behind the roles of Nursery Assistant, Classroom Assistant and Pre-school Assistant. This course is structured around four themes:
• Introducing the role of the early years practitioner
• Legislation, framework and professional practice
• Play, development and learning for school
• Professional development.

During the course, you will aim to work 250 placement hours in childcare settings.

The department puts on a range of activities and trips for learners, with a week put aside each term to focus on your personal development, team skills and experience of the wider world beyond where we live and learn.

Assessment is by a combination of observations, written assessments, set tasks and other evidence.

The course is an excellent preparation for the Level 3 Childcare and Education Diploma.
