Are you looking for an opportunity to earn while you learn? Then an apprenticeship could be for you! Apprenticeships at Sandwell College are a fantastic way to gain training and achieve nationally recognised qualifications whilst also earning a salary.

Students will be either paid National Minimum Apprenticeship wage or more, depending on the employer.

The course is available to anyone 16 plus who wish to gain work place experience, be paid a wage and be equipped with the knowledge, skills and behaviours to secure employment.

This is a one year course with one day a week at college and 4 days at the employer. The day at college, students will be developing knowledge and skills. Each student will get an allocated assessor who will visit the workplace every two months to monitor progress. The assessor will provide guidance on completing the required portfolio of evidence and guidance through the end assessment process.

As a Machining Technician apprentice, you’ll learn how to set up, operate, monitor, and adjust a wide range of advanced machinery used to produce complex, precision-engineered components. From aeroplanes and automobiles to life-saving medical devices and cutting-edge defence systems, the parts you’ll help create play a vital role in some of the world’s most important industries.

The minimum entry requirements for this Level 3 Engineering Technician Machinist Apprenticeship are as follows;

  • Level 2 Maths and English (can be completed during the apprenticeship)
  • Demonstrate a passion for the industry
  • Be at least 16 years of age

What you’ll learn:

  • How to set up machines for production, ensuring accuracy from the start

  • Monitor and fine-tune machinery throughout production to maintain precision and quality

  • Operate a range of high-tech equipment, including:

    • Centre lathes

    • Vertical and horizontal milling machines

    • Cylindrical and surface grinding machines

    • Electro-discharge machines

    • CNC (Computer Numerical Control) multi-axis machines

    • Gear cutting and gear grinding equipment

Students will be assessed in a number of ways:

  • Complete a portfolio of evidence
  • A selection of theory exams
  • End Point Assessment (including an interview and skills assessment and multi choice exam)

Students have a number of options after completing this course:

 

  • Further education: Level 4 Higher Apprenticeship in Engineering, HNC/HND in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering, Degree Apprenticeship in Engineering or Manufacturing
  • Specialist Courses – such as advanced CNC programming, CAD/CAM, robotics, quality assurance, or additive manufacturing.
  • Career Progression including:  CNC Programmer / Setter / Operator, Precision Machinist, Manufacturing or Production Technician, Quality Control Technician, Toolmaker or Prototype Engineer, Technical Support Engineer, Maintenance Engineer
