Are you looking for an opportunity to earn while you learn? Then an apprenticeship could be for you! Apprenticeships at Sandwell College are a fantastic way to gain training and achieve nationally recognised qualifications whilst also earning a salary.

Students will be either paid National Minimum Apprenticeship wage or more, depending on the employer.

The course is available to anyone 16 plus who wish to gain work place experience, be paid a wage and be equipped with the knowledge, skills and behaviours to secure employment.

This apprenticeship is designed for individuals aiming to develop a career in providing technical support within engineering and manufacturing sectors. It is ideal for school leavers entering the industry or current employees seeking to upskill in areas such as engineering drawing, CAD, quality control, CNC programming, robotics, and process engineering.

  • English GCSE Grade 4/C, Level 2 Functional Skills (or equivalent)
  • Mathematics GCSE Grade 4/C, Level 2 Functional Skills (or equivalent)
  • You must attend a formal interview

This programme prepares you to play a vital role in keeping engineering and manufacturing operations running smoothly, efficiently, and to the highest standards. You’ll become the link between design, production, and delivery, ensuring that every part of the process is supported with technical expertise, coordination, and continuous improvement.

What You’ll Do:

  • Support engineering and manufacturing teams with technical knowledge and hands-on problem-solving

  • Interpret and use engineering data and technical documentation to keep projects on track

  • Plan and coordinate workflows, services, and resources for smooth operations

  • Use specialist software such as CAD to create, adapt, and improve design solutions

  • Inspect and test equipment or services, analysing results and compiling technical reports

  • Drive efficiency by contributing to continuous improvement and quality audits

  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations

  • Employer site visits and guest speakers from the industry
  • Skills competitions (e.g., WorldSkills UK Engineering)
  • Engineering and manufacturing project challenges
  • Specialist workshops and equipment demonstrations
  • Trips to industry expos and trade shows
  • On-programme assessment: Practical skills assessment, portfolio of evidence, employer and training provider reviews
  • End Point Assessment (EPA): Practical assessment, professional discussion underpinned by a portfolio, and a multiple-choice knowledge test

Regular support is provided by workplace mentors, assessors, and college tutors to guide the apprentice throughout the programme

  • Higher Apprenticeship in Manufacturing Engineering
  • HNC/HND in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering
  • Degree Apprenticeship in Engineering
  • Roles such as CAD Technician, Quality Control Specialist, CNC Programmer, or Process Engineer
  • Team Leader or Engineering Supervisor positions
