Are you looking for an opportunity to earn while you learn? Then an apprenticeship could be for you! Apprenticeships at Sandwell College are a fantastic way to gain training and achieve nationally recognised qualifications whilst also earning a salary.

Students will be either paid National Minimum Apprenticeship wage or more, depending on the employer.

The course is available to anyone 16 plus who wish to gain work place experience, be paid a wage and be equipped with the knowledge, skills and behaviours to secure employment.

This is a one year course with one day a week at college and 4 days at the employer.

This hands-on programme is perfect for practical problem-solvers who enjoy building, shaping, and creating real-world components from raw materials.

The minimum entry requirements for this Level 2 Engineering Operative Apprenticeship are as follows;

  • Level 1 Maths and English (can complete during apprenticeship)
  • Demonstrate a passion for the industry
  • Be at least 16 years of age

As a fabrication engineering apprentice, you’ll develop a strong foundation in key engineering principles while specialising in the processes used to fabricate and join metal components. You’ll learn how to mark out and prepare materials with accuracy, shape them using techniques such as cutting, bending, or forming, and join them through a variety of welding or fastening methods.

You’ll gain in-depth knowledge of:

  • Industry-standard marking out and material preparation techniques

  • Fabrication and joining processes used across manufacturing and engineering

  • Safe working practices, including isolation procedures and safe reinstatement of equipment

Under expert guidance, you’ll put your skills to the test in live work environments, producing components that meet exact technical specifications and carrying out quality checks to ensure top-tier results at every stage.

This route is ideal for those aiming to work in sectors such as metal fabrication, structural engineering, manufacturing, or construction.

Modules:

Core knowledge: An engineering operative will understand:

  • How to obtain the necessary job instructions, engineering drawings and specifications and how to interpret them
  • Relevant statutory, quality, environmental compliance procedures/systems, organisational and health and safety regulations relating to engineering operations
  • Their individual roles and responsibilities within the organisation and the flexibility required to support the achievement of company targets
  • Engineering operational practices, processes and procedures
  • Potential problems that can occur within the engineering operations and how they can be avoided

Core skills: An engineering operative will be able to:

  • Work safely at all times, complying with health and safety legislation, regulations, environmental compliance procedures and systems and other relevant guidelines
  • Identify and deal appropriately with any risks, hazards, hazardous situations and problems that may occur within the engineering environment within the limits of their responsibility
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills which include oral, written, electronic
  • Complete appropriate documentation accurately, efficiently and legibly using the correct terminology where required
  • Obtain and follow the correct documentation, specifications and work instructions in accordance with time constraints and the roles and responsibilities identified for the engineering activities, extracting the necessary data/information from specification and related documentation
  • Select and use appropriate tools, equipment and materials to carry out the engineering operation
  • Deal appropriately with any problems that may occur within the manufacturing environment within the limits of their responsibility
  • Work efficiently and effectively at all times maintaining workplace organisation and minimising waste

You will be assed by a number of methods including:

  • Completing a portfolio of evidence
  • Selection of theory exams
  • End Point Assessment (including interview and skills assessment)
  • Further apprenticeship training (Level 3 Plate Welder, Level 3 Metal Fabricator, Level 3 Engineering Technician)
  • Specialist training in welding, CNC machining or structural steelwork
  • Progress to a Level 3 Diploma in Engineering, Fabrication & Welding
  • Job roles including: Fabriaction Operative, Welder, Fabricator, Maintenance Assistant and more!
