Start Date

Teacher with two adult students

Designed with NHS and health and social care staff in mind, this practical course develops the counselling skills used to build trust, listen with empathy and communicate sensitively when people may be distressed, anxious or facing change.

You will explore counselling skills, relevant theory, ethical practice, professional boundaries and self-awareness. These skills can complement your existing role, but the qualification does not qualify you to practise as a counsellor.

Come along to our recruitment event on:

Wed 14th October 12-6pm at The Learning Skills Campus. Drop in at a time that suits you.

Applicants should have basic written and spoken English skills and an interest in personal development. More importantly, learners must be emotionally ready to take part in a course that involves self-reflection and personal sharing. You will be expected to talk about your own experiences and how they have shaped you.

Because of the personal nature of the course, you cannot attend with someone you know, including friends, family, or colleagues. This helps to maintain confidentiality and create a safe space where all learners can fully engage in the process.

Is this the right course for me at this time?

This evening option is the same curriculum as the fastrack option and leads to the same qualification, but is delivered at a more manageable pace. It is ideal for learners who prefer additional time for reading, reflection and completing assignments, or who are balancing study alongside work, family or other commitments. The pace allows learners to fully engage with the learning while progressing steadily through the course. This course is a learning environment, not a therapy group. While you will be encouraged to reflect on your own life experiences and how these have shaped your values, beliefs, and behaviours, the primary focus is on developing counselling skills—not on receiving emotional support. You will be expected to talk about yourself, work closely with others, and give and receive constructive feedback.

If you are currently receiving support for your mental health—such as counselling, therapy, or medication—this does not exclude you from joining. However, it is important to think carefully about whether this is the right time for you to take part in a course that requires emotional openness and self-exploration. It may be necessary to consult with your service provider, GP, counsellor or therapist on whether the course is right for you.

If the course team feels that additional emotional support may be needed during the course, you may be encouraged to seek help from a qualified counsellor outside of the course. We recommend speaking to your tutor or support team if you are unsure about your readiness. It’s important that you feel in a stable enough place emotionally to participate fully, while also maintaining your own wellbeing.

The course can help you to:

· Listen more confidently and respond without rushing to give advice

· Communicate with empathy during sensitive or emotionally challenging conversations

· Maintain clear professional boundaries and support people appropriately

· Develop self-awareness and reflective practice for safer, more thoughtful support

· Strengthen transferable skills for patient-facing, care, wellbeing and support roles

· Build a foundation for progression to a Level 3 counselling qualification

Who is the course for?

It may be particularly valuable for:

· NHS clinical and non-clinical staff

· Healthcare assistants and support workers

· Adult and children’s social care staff

· Mental health, wellbeing and rehabilitation teams

· Care home, domiciliary care and community-support workers

· People considering further counselling training

What will learning involve?

This is an experiential course. Learners should be prepared to:

· Participate fully in counselling-skills practice

· Give and receive constructive feedback

· Reflect on their learning, communication and personal development

· Engage respectfully with peers and maintain confidentiality

· Bring emotional resilience and professionalism to the classroom

Please note: this course is not a form of personal therapy. Learners who need therapeutic support should access appropriate services outside the course.

Learners may take part in skills practice sessions, peer discussions, and activities that build confidence, emotional awareness, and self-reflection. These enrichment opportunities help learners grow both personally and professionally.

Students visit the FabLab to access innovative technology to support their learning.

At the Learning Skills campus, we have access to the immersive suite and simulation room, to practice skills in a relevant work-related environment.

Assessment is based on a mix of written assignments, weekly reflective journals, tutor observations, and practical skills demonstrations. There are no formal exams, but you will need to complete a portfolio of evidence showing your progress and understanding.

This course prepares learners for the Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Skills, which deepens understanding of counselling theory and practice. Students can also progress onto Level 2 Award in mentoring or Level 2 Award in Helping Skills course. These can support progression to mentoring roles, helping roles, health and social care qualifications, or volunteer positions where strong interpersonal skills are essential.
