This course is ideal for individuals who want to develop their skills in supporting others through mentoring. It’s suitable for those working or volunteering in education, youth work, community services, or support roles—and for anyone interested in helping others achieve their goals through guidance and encouragement.

Learners should have completed a Level 1 course in a related subject (such as interpersonal skills or counselling skills) or demonstrate a basic understanding of communication and self-reflection. A good level of English is recommended, as the course involves written work and discussion.

This qualification aims to introduce learners to the use of counselling skills in everyday life and work, and some of the approaches that underpin the use of these skills.

Although you will be given the opportunity to investigate the knowledge and skills needed to use counselling skills and engage in a helping interaction appropriately, this qualification does not qualify you to practice as a counsellor.

Course summary:

  • Understand the role and responsibilities of a mentor
  • Learn key communication and listening skills
  • Explore the mentoring relationship and boundaries
  • Build confidence in offering guidance and support
  • Gain practical tools for effective mentoring
  • Develop self-awareness and reflective practice

The course is delivered on Tuesday evening 5-9PM for 30 weeks.

Course cost:

The course costs £417 but concessions may apply.

Learners will have the opportunity to take part in role plays, case studies, and peer mentoring exercises to build confidence and apply their skills in realistic settings. These activities help develop teamwork, communication, and practical mentoring experience.  We also use Virtual Reality headsets to practice communication skills and have guest speakers from current mentors in the college.

Assessment is portfolio-based and includes written tasks, practical activities including a role-play, and reflective journals. Learners will complete assignments that demonstrate their understanding and ability to apply mentoring skills. There are no formal exams.

After completing this course, learners can progress to the NCFE Level 2 or 3 Counselling Skills if eligible, or qualifications in teacher education such as the L3 Award in Education and Training.  The course is a valuable step for anyone seeking to support others in a professional or voluntary capacity.
