Learners on this course will develop their professional strategic leadership and management abilities; with an emphasis on acquiring the knowledge, skills and behaviours to deliver impact, behave ethically and demonstrate a commitment to continual learning and development.

Flexi-Study delivery enables learners to  fit their  studies in around their work and personal life.  The Flexi-Study approach combines one day a month of face-to-face classroom teaching with independent distance learning,  using online, on-demand learning materials which are available 24/7.  Learners also have a dedicated tutor who is there to support them throughout their studies.

This course is for adult learners who are practising or aspiring senior managers and directors working across a range of organisations in the private, public and third sectors.

Unemployed learners with appropriate prior work experience and/or qualifications are also welcome to apply.

A minimum of a Level 5 CMI Extended Diploma in Management and Leadership or equivalent qualification (e.g., HND/FdA/BA/BSc in Management).

However, mature applicants (over 21 years) with relevant work experience (paid and/or unpaid) may be able to join the course in lieu of  formal qualifications, subject to satisfactory performance at a selection interview.

Learners study four units:-

  1. Strategic Leadership: this unit equips learners with an in-depth understanding of strategic leadership within an organisational context.  The unit focuses on the leader’s ability to respond creatively to complex organisational challenges and understand how to set and deliver sustainable strategic goals.
  2. Leading and Developing People to Optimise Performance: this unit develops in learners an in-depth understanding of how to effectively lead and develop people.  Learners will have the opportunity to propose a leadership and development strategy.
  3. Developing Organisational Strategy: this unit enables learners to develop and influence an organisation’s strategic direction through the development of a meaningful strategy.  Learners will have the opportunity to develop an organisational strategy to achieve a business goal.
  4. Leading Strategic Change: this unit focuses on how to understand the scope, context and complexity of leading strategic change.  Learners will have the opportunity to develop a proposal to lead a strategic change.

Course costs:

£2,500 in total.

Course delivery:

The classes are delivered at the College’s ‘Tomorrow’s People’ centre at 13 Bennetts Hill in Birmingham City Centre. New Street Station and Snow Hill Station are only a few minutes’ walk away, and the area is well served by buses and trams.

The course runs for 8 months: 1 session per month on a Friday 9am – 5pm.

Online, on-demand learning materials are available 24/7 and are accessible by both PCs and mobile devices.

All learners are given FREE professional membership of the CMI, which includes access to a range of CMI products and services to support them throughout the qualification and later as they progress in their career.

Each learner automatically becomes a CMI member, gaining access to numerous benefits, including global networking opportunities, which significantly enhance their employment and career development prospects.

All learners have access to CMI’s Career Development Centre (CDC), which provides tailored cutting-edge CPD and career resources free of charge.  Through the CDC, learners can use management diagnostic tools, receive personalised development plans, get instant CV and interview feedback and build skills with expert advice videos and interactive e-learning.

All  learners have the opportunity to connect with experienced managers and leaders for career guidance and support with improving their management and leadership skills, free of charge via the CMI Mentoring scheme These mentoring opportunities provide learners with a learning experience which elevates knowledge-sharing to a practical level.

Each unit is assessed by one written assignment of approximately 3,500 – 4,500 words.  Learners are supported with assignment completion via structured assignment workshops.  Learners are allowed three attempts at each assignment.

Progression opportunities include moving on to other CMI level 7 qualifications  for example ‘topping-up’ to a CMI Level 7 Extended Diploma in Strategic Management and Leadership Practice or undertaking a CMI Level 7 Certificate/Diploma in Leadership Coaching and Mentoring.

Subject to having senior management experience,  learners may be able to progress on to a CMI Level 8 Strategic Direction and Leadership course (equivalent to a Doctorate in Management), or alternatively a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) or a Masters Degree in Management and Leadership.

Learners who are aspiring to work in a senior management role may be able to progress to jobs such as:-

  • Senior Manager
  • Director
  • CEO

Learners may also further their ongoing personal and professional development by applying for full membership (MCMI) or even Chartered Membership of the CMI (CMgr) – subject to meeting CMI eligibility criteria.
