Sandwell College was proud to host the launch of West Midlands Works, an ambitious plan to help 93,000 people into quality jobs over the next decade.
The launch event, led by the West Midlands Combined Authority, saw Mayor Richard Parker, and Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, The Rt Hon Pat McFadden, present the initiative which brings together local authorities, employers, colleges, the NHS, and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to raise the regional employment rate and unlock opportunities for all.
At the heart of this plan is skills – giving people the tools, confidence and pathways they need to succeed.
Our Adult Learners joined the event to share their stories and enjoyed speaking with Sarah Coombes, MP for West Bromwich, CEO and Principal of The Sandwell Colleges, Lisa Capper MBE, and the Mayor, as well as networking with guests.

The launch included two insightful panel discussions:
– From Fragmentation to Integration: Building a Joined-Up Employment, Health and Skills System, chaired by the WMCA’s Executive Director of Employment, Skills, Health and Communities Helene Dearn OBE, and featuring WMCA’s Chief Executive Ed Cox, Chair of NHS Birmingham, Black Country, and Solihull Integrated Care Board Danielle Oum, Managing Director of Birmingham City Council Joanne Roney and Midlands, Yorkshire and the Humber Department for Work and Pensions Director Nick Riddle
– Making Work Work: Good Jobs, Future Generations and a Fairer Regional Economy, chaired by the WMCA’s Head of Health and Communities Dr Mubasshir Ajaz, with contributions from Helene Dearn OBE, Lisa Capper MBE, CEO of Spectra Matthew Gordon OBE, Coventry City Council’s Strategic Lead for Skills Glen Smailes, and Black Country NHS Manager Vicky Harris
Together, we’re proud to play our part in building a stronger, more skilled and inclusive West Midlands.
