Sandwell College is proud to have been featured in a recent BBC News article exploring how the beauty industry is thriving across the Midlands and how our students are training to be part of this exciting, fast-growing sector.
The BBC story highlighted the industry’s remarkable growth, worth £15.9bn to the UK economy last year, and how beauty businesses are helping to revitalise high streets in Birmingham and beyond. While many sectors have faced challenges since the pandemic, beauty is booming thanks to its focus on creativity, customer experience, diversity, and innovation.
Sandwell College’s Hair & Beauty courses are part of that success story, with a 55% increase in student admissions as more young people choose to build their future in make-up artistry, nails, lashes, skincare, and other beauty specialisms.
Students like Niamh Coffey, Roseanna Wiggins-Lambert, and Demi Leigh — who were all interviewed by the BBC, spoke about how beauty training has boosted their creativity, confidence, and ambition.
“I like making people feel like their best selves, whether that’s with make-up or with nails or lashes,” said Niamh.
“If you don’t see yourself doing it, give it a try — you’ll love it,” added Demi.
