This course is aimed at school leavers and helps students to develop the basic employment skills, practical skills, and knowledge required to work within the construction sector.

It’s about preparing you to meet the needs of employers and work in the industry. The course consists of practical tasks covering 3 trade disciplines – Carpentry, Painting and Decorating and Plastering and Tiling.

Employers will expect good attendance, behaviour, and communication skills, enabling you to interact with clients, work safely and use initiative.

As the course progresses, you will build upon your skills in preparation for practical assessments. A large part of the course is workshop based, allowing you to acquire practical skills and job-related knowledge. As a college, we will reinforce the values expected in the industry to give you the skills to be successful in work and life.

There are no formal entry requirements, but you should have a keen interest in the construction industry. Career guidance will be provided for you through advice and guidance sessions.

The Step Into Construction course is delivered by qualified tradespeople who have years of experience working on building sites.

Modules include:

  • Construct halving joints
  • Construct housing joints
  • Painting Techniques
  • Tiling a plain wall
  • Preparing background surfaces and applying render coats
  • Construct angled halving joints
  • Painting and Wallpapering
  • Applying decorative effects
  • Preparing background surfaces and apply finishing coats
