ESOL Entry 2 and ESOL Entry 3 are designed for learners who are gradually becoming more confident in English. These levels follow on from ESOL Entry 1 and help learners build stronger communication skills for everyday life, work, or further study.

ESOL Entry 2 is for people who:

Can already
• Understand and use simple sentences in familiar situations
• Ask and answer questions about personal details, daily routines, likes/dislikes, directions and time

Are developing reading and writing skills
• Can read short texts (like leaflets, signs, or letters)
• Can write basic sentences and fill in forms with more detail

Typically
• Have finished Entry 1 or have basic English from life experience
• Are ready to use English in public places (e.g. at the GP, jobcentre, school)
• Want to prepare for work or vocational training
• Are learning to use more grammar (e.g. past tense, questions, conjunctions)

 

ESOL Entry 3 is for people who:

Can already
• Take part in short conversations on familiar topics (e.g. work, family, health)
• Express opinions, give reasons, and use a wider vocabulary
• Understand instructions and information from TV, radio, or announcements

Have stronger literacy
• Can read longer texts such as short news articles, leaflets, or emails
• Can write paragraphs with more accuracy and organisation (e.g. notes, letters, or short stories)

Typically
• Have completed Entry 2 or have good survival English
• Are preparing for:
– Entry to work
– Further education/training (e.g. Level 1 functional skills or vocational courses)
– Citizenship or Life in the UK Test
• Want more independence and confidence in daily life

There are no formal entry requirements for this course. An initial assessment is carried out to identify your level of English and place you in the best possible group and level.

  • ESOL courses cover essential skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening at different levels (based on your entry point)
  • All ESOL 16-18 learners attend 4 hours of Functional Skills Maths alongside their ESOL course
  • All Entry Level 2 and 3 learners must choose one of the following options (alongside ESOL) to study as part of their programme:
    Entry Level 3 Award in Health & Social Care
    Entry Level 3 Award in Automotive
    Entry Level 3 Award in Construction
    Entry Level 3 Digital Skills

We organise a range of enrichment activities, such as trips, cinema visits, meals and fundraising, and we also celebrate festivals from different cultures and religions.

We have speakers within the college and from outside who will come and give you information about Sexual Health, Drugs, Sport, Careers, Health, Money, Safety, Volunteering Opportunities and many more subjects.

You will be continually assessed by your teacher throughout the programme, and those ready to sit exams (nationally recognised qualifications) will be offered the opportunity to do so in December, March and June.

Entry Level 2 learners can progress to Entry Level 3 or a small number of vocational options, such as:

Entry Level 3 learners can progress to most vocational options across college, such as:

Health & Social Care

Public Services

Art & Design
