This one-year Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning qualification is designed to provide learners with the knowledge and skills needed when working directly with children and young people in school or college environments. It covers a wide range of areas including children and young people’s development, supporting children and young people’s positive behaviour and communication and professional relationships.

You’ll gain a strong understanding of child development, classroom support strategies, and the essential skills needed to assist teachers and pupils effectively. As part of the course, you’ll complete a 2-day-a-week placement in a primary school, giving you valuable hands-on experience and the confidence to thrive in a real-world setting.

 

You’ll need to be at least 16 and have GCSE Maths and English at Grade 3/D or above.

You’ll also need to be on a practical placement in a learning environment (school or college) for the duration of the course, as you’ll need to demonstrate competence in both skills and knowledge.

The Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning qualification has been designed to provide learners with an understanding of the knowledge and skills needed when working directly with children and young people in school or college environments. It covers a wide range of areas including children and young people’s development, supporting children and young people’s positive behaviour and communication and professional relationships. There are 11 mandatory units in this qualification.

  • Understand schools and colleges as organisations
  • Understand children and young people’s development
  • Safeguarding children and young people
  • Equality, diversity and inclusion in a learning environment for children and young people STL2C5: Maintain relationships with children and young people
  • Support the health and safety of children and young people
  • Support positive behaviour in a learning environment for children and young people 35 STL2C8: Contribute to teamwork in a learning environment
  • Understand children and young people’s play and leisure
  • Promote an effective learning environment
  • Provide displays in a learning environment

All units will be internally assessed using a range of methods.

Knowledge is assessed through a portfolio of evidence including posters, presentations, leaflets and assignments.

Skills will be assessed in a real work environment and must include direct observation and professional discussion while on placement.

The Level 2 Certificate enables progression to:

  • Level 3 Diploma in Supporting Teaching and Learning
  • T Level Education & Early Years
  • Early Years Apprenticeship
  • Moving into EYE Area at Level 2
  • Employment as a LSA in a school
