This Level 1 Caring for Children Award/Certificate/Diploma is a one-year full-time course designed for school leavers who are aiming to work in a childcare setting. It’s the perfect starting point to help you explore the world of Childcare and Early Years and gain the skills needed to progress to our Level 2 course. It will provide a solid foundation to help you understand how children grow, learn and develop. The course is made up of theory, practical activities and gaining hands-on experience in a childcare setting.

You’ll need GCSE Maths and English at Grade 1 or above OR Entry Level Functional Skills English and Maths.

What You’ll Learn:

  • An introduction to caring for children of different ages

  • Key stages in child growth and development

  • Creative and practical skills for working with children

  • The importance of safeguarding and promoting health and well-being

  • Insights into Forest Schools and outdoor learning

Modules Include:

  • Growth and development of young children

  • Preparing for your next steps

  • Technology activities for young children

  • Practical Health and Safety when with young children

  • Finding out about forest schools

  • Craft activities for young children

  • Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people

  • Healthy eating for families

  • Confidence building for the young child through play

  • The Black Country Living Museum (Victorian schoolroom experience)
  • Forest School session (outdoor learning)
  • Universities
  • Library study sessions
  • Fab Lab sessions

Other enrichment activities:

  • Cinema trips
  • Ice skating
  • Roller skating
  • Cadbury World
  • Theme parks

We also work with a variety of employers to give you the experience and feel more ‘carer-ready’ including:

  1. Eton Valley Primary School
  2. Holly Head Academy School
  3. Victoria Park Academy School
  4. Little Steppers Pre School
  5. St Albans Pre-School

You will produce a portfolio of evidence, this will include posters, presentations, leaflets, tasks and assignments.

There are also practical tasks that support the theory – such as risk assessments, forest school and various creative activities.

On successful completion of this Level 1 Caring for Children Award/Certificate/Diploma, you can progress to a Level 2 course (Level 2 Diploma in Early Years & Level 2 Supporting Teaching and Learning).
