This Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing Arts Practice – Dance course is aimed at 16-18 year olds with a passion for Dance, looking to further their skills within the Performing Arts Industry.

This two-year, full-time course is the equivalent of 3 A Levels and offers the opportunity to cover the practical as well as the theoretical areas of dance.

If you are passionate about the arts and enjoy dance performance, then this could be the course for you.

You’ll need at least four GCSEs at Grade 4/C or above, including English, and/or a Level 2 qualification or equivalent.

All prospective students will be invited to attend an audition workshop before being offered a place.

This Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing Arts Practice – Dance course is aimed at students who want to continue their learning via the creative world of Performance.

The nature of the course demands total commitment and high levels of energy from students. Full-scale productions are staged each term for a variety of different audiences.

  • Learn dance and movement skills, exploring techniques in ballet, jazz, contemporary, tap and physical theatre
  • Gain confidence in leading physical warm-up exercises, choreographing dance routines and delivering dance workshops
  • Develop your flexibility, stamina, strength, control and overall fitness
  • Develop interpretation, characterisation, singing and vocal skills
  • Collaborate with other performing arts learners to take part in a variety of performance projects, leading to showcases and full-scale performances
  • Work alongside professional dancers from ME Dance or audition to take part in a curtain-raiser at the Birmingham Hippodrome
  • Develop a repertoire of audition material, create professional headshots and showreels and produce a digital portfolio to support your future career as a performer
  • Learn about the wider Performing Arts Industry and the range of job roles and careers within the creative sector

Through the Student Union and college committees, you can take part in everything from sports teams, enterprise and volunteering projects to fundraising campaigns and even the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

There’s something for everyone – from joining a debating society, to attending inclusive cultural events and festivals, or enjoying one of our regular film nights and theatre trips.

Learning methods include practical drama workshops, theatre productions, private study, tutorials, theatre visits and class work.

Learners are assessed through completing assignments throughout the course.

Work is graded against specific assessment criteria, in which learners may be awarded a Pass, Merit or Distinction.  Learners must achieve a Pass grade or higher for each criteria to pass the unit.  Learners must achieve an overall Pass grade or higher for all units in order to achieve the full qualification.

A sample of learner work is moderated by the exam board each year to confirm the work meets national standards.

Most students have university or stage school as a target at the end of their studies, and past students have gone on to join degree-level courses across the country, including at Birmingham School of Acting, LMA, MET, and Performers College.

Past learners have progressed into a range of successful careers, performing in West End musicals, as dancers/entertainers on cruise ships and holiday parks, teaching performing arts or opening their own dance school.
