The Level 1 introductory diploma in Art and Design is aimed at learners who want to gain an understanding of Art and Design at a beginner level. The course offers a variety of different skills in 2D and 3D media, including drawing, watercolour, print making, textiles, photography, and digital media. Additional life skills are embedded to support progression from school into college life.

You’ll need 4 GCSEs at grades 3–1 (D–G), including English Language and Maths at grades 3-1 (D–G), or a relevant Entry 3 vocational qualification and you will also be asked to sit an Initial Assessment. The Initial Assessment must show that you are ready to study English and Maths at Level Entry 3/ Level 1.

 

The course is a great opportunity to gain an understanding of historical and contemporary artists and designers, and how to research information to support this. You’ll develop core skills such as written communication, organisation, personal progression, and time management

All students will continue weekly studies of English and Maths (Functional Skills or GCSE) as part of the Programme of Study, at a relevant level.

Modules covered:

  • Organisation – develop skills to manage time, plan for deadlines and be prepared for college life.
  • Mood boards and print making – Work toward a theme to develop skills in mood board creation. Transfer research and design ideas into prints
  • Personal Progression – gain an understanding of your future progression with a focus on your skills and how these will help you develop a future career plan
  • Creating an Art image – learn 2D art skills using different media alongside studying historical and contemporary artists to produce your own art interpretation.
  • Using cameras – understand how to use professional photography equipment, including cameras, lighting, effects and digital editing to produce a photographic image
  • Designing a product – learn the design process from inspiration into design and manufacture to create your own individual product.
  • Planning and marketing an exhibition – understand the process of producing an Art exhibition to display your work in a professional setting

  • A wide range of professional grade Photography facilities, including lighting rig, studio lights and dark room traditional printing facilities, including access to a broad range of film and digital cameras

Assessment is 100% coursework over 10 units throughout the year. Feedback will be given regularly to support your achievement and progression.

  • Progression into Level 2 Art and Design with either the Art and Textiles or Photography and Digital Media pathways.
  • From Level 2, progress onto Level 3 Art and Design with either the Art and Design, Fashion, Photography or Digital Media pathway
  • Opportunity to progress onto other Level 2 courses throughout the college. Previous students have progressed onto Level 2 Art and Design, Automotive – body and paint repair, apprenticeships, health and social care (a whole range)
