Animal Care students holding and feeding geckos

This Level 1 Diploma in Land-Based Studies course would suit anyone who is thinking about or interested in a career working with animals, growing food crops, or managing our natural environment. Learners do not need any experience of working in a land-based role or any previous qualification, just an enthusiasm and commitment to gain new skills and learn about the importance of the land-based industries.

There are no formal entry requirements but the course has externally set exams so Maths and English at Grade 2 and above would be an advantage.

This course is perfect for those interested in Land-Based Studies. As a student, you will have one full day every other week on placement at Forge Mill Farm (for the duration of the course). You will also have a minimum of half a day working in the college’s onsite animal room weekly for the duration of the course.

You’ll study the following 7 topics:

  • Safe and effective working practices in land based industries (exam)
  • Preparing to work in the land-based industries
  • Assist with maintaining the health and wellbeing of animals
  • Assist with the movement, handling and accommodation of animals
  • Animals in the wild and the main features
  • Uses and domestication of animals
  • Assist with feeding and watering of animals

Facilities:

We’re proud of our exciting Animal Care room – a modern, interactive learning space home to a variety of animals including bearded dragons, leopard geckos, corn snakes, royal pythons, white tree frogs, guinea pigs, gerbils, hamsters, and many more! These fantastic new facilities provide you with the opportunity to get up close and gain valuable experience in caring for different species.

Students on this course have a whole host of enrichment activities to help them develop:

  • Minimum of half a day working in the college’s onsite animal room weekly for the duration of the course.
  • One full day Work placement every other week at forge mill farm (for the duration of the course)
  • One full day working in the colleges onsite dog grooming salons
