Are you looking for an opportunity to earn while you learn? Then an apprenticeship could be for you! Apprenticeships at Sandwell College are a fantastic way to gain training and achieve nationally recognised qualifications whilst also earning a salary.

Students will be either paid National Minimum Apprenticeship wage or more, depending on the employer.

We offer a structured training programme for those in employment who want to learn and we work with employers to recruit apprentices seeking an apprenticeship placement in carpentry and joinery.

This course is ideal for:

  • School leavers looking to start a career in the construction industry
  • Adults retraining or upskilling for carpentry and joinery roles
  • Apprentices employed in a relevant trade seeking formal qualifications

The minimum entry requirements for this Level 2 Carpentry & Joinery Intermediate Apprenticeship are as follows;

  • Completion of Level 1 Carpentry and Joinery, or relevant industry experience (would be good not necessary)
  • Basic literacy and numeracy (initial assessments may be required)
  • A work placement or employment in a relevant role (we can help you achieve this)
  • Demonstrate a passion for the industry
  • Be at least 16 years of age

 

 

This hands-on apprenticeship usually lasts 24 months and provides a comprehensive introduction to the carpentry and joinery trade, equipping you with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the construction industry. You will develop advanced woodworking, measuring, and installation skills, with a strong focus on mastering both first and second fix carpentry techniques.

Through practical training and real-world experience, you’ll learn how to interpret technical drawings and building plans, understand construction site safety and regulations, and prepare for a career in the sector or progression to further education. Functional Skills in Maths, English, and ICT are embedded into the programme where needed, supporting your personal and professional development.

You’ll also benefit from inclusive teaching that promotes Equality & Diversity, British Values, and Prevent Duty, ensuring you are fully prepared for the modern workplace.

  • Health, Safety & Welfare in Construction
  • Principles of Building Construction, Communication & Information
  • First Fix Carpentry
  • Second Fix Carpentry
  • Structural Carcassing Operations
  • Bench Joinery (optional pathway – depending on route)

On successful completion of the course, you will achieve the following qualifications:

  • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Wood Occupations
  • Level 2 Diploma in Wood Occupations
  • Functional Skills Maths Level 1
  • Functional Skills English Level 1
  • Employment Rights and Responsibilities
  • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills
  • Apprenticeship Achievement Certificate

All learners will have a dedicated trainer/assessor who will plan learning and assessments with you. The assessment methods used will include the following:

  • Practical assessments in the workshop with tutor feedback
  • Written exams for core theory modules (City & Guilds assessments)
  • Coursework/portfolio for apprentices
  • Mock assessments and revision sessions provided
  • Tutorial and learning support teams available for all students

You will attend college one day per week and you will receive regular workplace assessments which will assess competency. You will be required to sit a number of exams during the programme in addition to creating a portfolio of learning.

20% of the training will be delivered off the job and this can include: simulation, online learning or training from employers, shadowing, mentoring, industry visits, attendance at competitions and support in writing assignments.

On successful completion of this Level 2 Carpentry & Joinery Intermediate Apprenticeship, you can:

  • Gain employment as a site carpenter, joiner, or general construction operative
  • Progress within the company you did your apprenticeship with
  • Apply for roles such as Maintenance Operative, Kitchen Fitter, or Shopfitter
  • Specialist training in Heritage Joinery or Timber Framing
  • Higher Education in Construction or Built Environment (training from employers)
