Ever wanted to create something with your own hands? Whether you’re curious about DIY or considering a career in construction, this four-week practical taster course introduces you to the essential skills used in carpentry and joinery.

You’ll learn basic techniques, practise using tools safely and build confidence working with materials, all in a relaxed and supportive workshop environment. Each week focuses on developing real, hands-on skills that you can apply at home or use as a stepping stone into further construction study.

Delivered at Cradley Heath Skills Campus, this course is perfect for adults wanting to try out carpentry and joinery before progressing onto longer, accredited qualifications.

Who is this course for?

Ideal for adults aged 19+ who want to:
• Learn basic carpentry and joinery techniques
• Build confidence working with tools and materials
• Try out a trade before committing to further study
• Improve DIY skills for home projects
• Explore potential careers in construction

No previous experience required.

• You must be aged 19+
• Fully funded for most adults living in the West Midlands Combined Authority area

Across four practical workshop sessions, you’ll learn:
• How to safely use hand tools and basic power tools
• Measuring, marking and cutting materials accurately
• Simple joinery techniques used in everyday projects
• Creating practical items using hands-on carpentry skills
• Workshop safety, materials and basic construction processes

Learning is fully practical, with demonstrations, guided activities and hands-on practice.
