Designed for learners who want to develop knowledge and practical skills in sport, exercise and fitness, this one-year foundation diploma course is equivalent to 1.5 A Levels and carries up to 96 UCAS points, depending on your final grades.

– A minimum Level 1 qualification in English/Maths
– A keen interest in the fitness industry

Mandatory units include:
– Anatomy and Physiology
– Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Wellbeing
– Professional Development in the Sports Industry
– Sports Leadership
– Practical Sports Performance
– Coaching for Performance
– Application of Fitness Testing (optional for some pathways)

 

Facilities:
– Fully equipped, industry-standard gym with cardiovascular machines, resistance machines, and free weights
– Functional training areas with kettlebells, battle ropes, medicine balls and TRX suspension equipment
– Strength and conditioning suite with squat racks, Olympic lifting platforms, and cable machines
– Access to professional external facilities including Alexander Stadium, used for athlete testing and applied fitness sessions

  • Visits to local fitness centres to provide insight into different operational environments
  • Guest speakers from the fitness industry – including gym managers and freelance personal trainers – sharing career insights and delivering specialist workshops
  • Fitness challenges and community events, including fundraising activities with the West Bromwich Albion Foundation
  • CPD-style tasters in group instruction, circuit training, and HIIT sessions

• Internal Assessment: Coursework, projects, presentations, practical tasks (most units)
• External Assessment: Controlled assessments and written exams (e.g. Anatomy and Physiology, Fitness Training)
• Grading: Pass (P), Merit (M), Distinction (D) or Distinction* (D*)

Students can go on to:

  • BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport (2nd year progression, equivalent to 3 A Levels)
  • University degree courses (e.g. Sport Science, PE Teaching, Coaching, Fitness)
  • Higher/Degree Apprenticeships (e.g. Personal Training, PE Assistant, Leisure Management)
  • Employment in the fitness industry, coaching or sport development
  • Career Pathways:
    • Fitness Instructor / Personal Trainer
    • PE Teacher (via HE route)
    • Sports Coach
    • Leisure Centre Assistant
    • Sport Development Officer
    • Strength & Conditioning Coach (with further training)
    • Rehabilitation / Therapy Assistant (with progression)
