Designed in line with The International Council for Coaching Excellence (ICCE) coaching degree standards, this course employs a blend of technology-enhanced coaching and hands-on experience via placement modules, preparing you for a digital world and offering mentorship within professional environments. Delivered in collaboration with the University of Wolverhampton, this industry-focused programme is designed to equip aspiring coaches with the essential knowledge, skills and practical experience required to thrive in diverse coaching environments.

The Foundation Degree in Sports Coaching and Development is a full-time two-year comprehensive course designed to provide you with a deeper understanding of areas such as sports psychology, fitness training, anatomy, and inclusive practice. This programme is ideal if you want to become a qualified sports coach working in schools, clubs, or community settings; work in sports development, helping to increase participation and engagement in sport; progress into PE teaching via top-up degrees and PGCE routes.

The course is aimed at:

  • people who have completed a BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Sport, A Levels (preferably including PE or Biology) or a Level 3 apprenticeships in sport or fitness
  • aspiring sports coaches who want to develop technical and pedagogical coaching skills, and gain experience working with children, youth, or adult participants in various settings
  • adults looking for a career change in the sports or fitness industry, especially if they already have informal experience coaching or volunteering in sport
  • people currently in assistant roles (e.g. teaching assistants in PE, youth sports leaders) who want to gain a formal qualification and progress in their careers
  • learners who plan to top up to a full BSc (Hons) degree after completing the foundation course

A minimum of 40 UCAS points, e.g. BTEC Level 3 qualifications or A Levels

You will explore key areas including coaching theory and practice, sport and exercise science, performance analysis and community engagement. With access to outstanding facilities, expert tuition, and real-world placement opportunities, you will develop a strong foundation for employment in schools, clubs, and sports organisations, or progression to the final year of an honours degree.

Level 5:
• Coaching philosophy in practice
• Analysis of sports performance
• Developing a professional project
• Sport and physical activity industry experience
• Sport coaching media
• Science in performance coaching

• Students can use the gym based facilities and sports facilities at the University of Wolverhampton and Sandwell Aquatics Centre
• Special guest lecturers and visits from staff working in the industry and delivering key content
• Opportunities to represent the WBA Foundation and College at football for those aged 19 and under

Combination of written reports, assignments, practical application and presentations

Whether you aim to become a professional coach, youth development specialist, or pursue further academic study, this programme offers a flexible and supportive pathway to success in the sports sector.

You could progress to a full BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching (top up at the University of Wolverhampton) and a MSc in Sports Coaching.

You could also gain work as a sports coach in community and potential academy settings, as this qualification opens doors to further coaching qualifications.

There are also opportunities for you to work in data analysis and lecturing fields.
