This course is aimed at adult learners aged 19+. It is designed to provide learners with a foundational understanding of mental health and a range of mental health conditions. It aims to raise awareness, increase knowledge of the causes of mental ill-health, and help learners understand the impact these conditions can have on individuals.

It is designed for individuals seeking to deepen their knowledge in Health Care or Social Care area, whether for personal development, and professional advancement

  • Level 1 certificates in both English and Maths.
  • Vocational or paid work experience would be of benefit.
  • There is no mandatory placement within the course.

This course offers a foundational understanding of mental health and various mental health conditions. It aims to increase awareness, knowledge of causes, and understanding of the impact of these conditions on individuals.

  • Mental Health: What it is, influences, help.
  • Stress: Causes, effects, coping.
  • Anxiety: Types, signs, management.
  • Phobias: What they are, impact, support.
  • Depression: Types, signs, help.
  • Bipolar: Mood swings, management.
  • Schizophrenia: Symptoms, support.
  • Dementia: Types, impact, care.
  • Eating Disorders: Types, consequences, help.
  • Postnatal Depression: Signs, impact, management

Awarding Body:

AIM Qualifications and Assessment Group is a UK-based Awarding Organisation (AO) and Access Validating Agency (AVA) that offers various qualifications and assessments. They have a long history, with over 40 years of experience in developing and awarding qualifications. Their mission is to empower learners through inclusive and high-quality education and training.

  • Guest speakers from NHS and care organisations
  • Workshops on mental health, wellbeing and self-care

These experiences help learners understand the sector, build their CV, and prepare for real-world employment.

  • Assessment / Portfolio of course work
  • Learning is assessed by a variety of methods to prepare you to study at Level 3.
  • These include written assignments, work booklets, presentations and tutor observation.
  • All of the assessment criteria in a unit must be met before the unit is deemed to be achieved. The unit achievement is not graded; units are either achieved or not achieved.

You will be assigned a Personal Tutor who will support you throughout your period of study to enable progression by setting professional and personal targets.

This Level 2 certificate primarily acts as a knowledge-based qualification that can open doors to further learning and potentially support entry into certain roles, especially when combined with further training and experience.

It demonstrates a commitment to understanding mental health, which is increasingly valued across various sectors. It gives you basic mental health knowledge for further study or entry-level support roles (with more training).

Examples include:

  • Level 3 courses such as Certificate in Understanding Mental Health.
  • Level 2 or 3 Certificates in Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care and Dementia Care.
  • Work opportunities such as a support worker (with extra training), healthcare assistant.
  • Also good for personal understanding.
