This Level 2 Award in Photographic Make-Up is an assessment-based course designed for adults looking to upskill or explore a taster into the beauty industry. It’s also ideal for 16–18-year-olds, who can study the course alongside their full-time programme and gain an additional qualification.

You’ll develop practical skills in the imaginative application of photographic make-up, learning to:

  • Create a wide range of looks using professional make-up products and tools

  • Master artistic techniques used in photography, fashion, and media

  • Build confidence and creativity in a professional salon environment

  • Strengthen employability and industry knowledge as a foundation for further learning

You must have GCSE Grade 3 or above in English and Maths, ESOL or Functional Skills Level 1.

The course is made up of one unit: Photographic Make-Up, offering a focused, skills-based introduction to working in the beauty and media make-up industry.

This course runs one evening per week for 3 hours.

Costs:

  • This course is fully funded for students aged 16–18.

  • Adults who don’t already have a Level 2 qualification or who receive certain benefits may also be eligible for funding.

  • Students will need to purchase a kit, but bursary support may be available if you’re eligible.

  • A uniform will be provided by the department, you’ll just need to buy appropriate footwear.

As part of the course, you’ll benefit from exciting industry links and additional training opportunities through our partnerships with leading employers, including:

  • Dermalogica – Skin care masterclasses, the Aspire programme, and the chance to become a Dermalogica Certified Therapist

  • Kirsty Meakin – Celebrity nail influencer offering exclusive training sessions

  • Capital Hair and Beauty – Workshops and the opportunity to earn additional certifications, including builder gel techniques

  • Studex Ear Piercing – Employer-led training with the option to gain a recognised ear-piercing qualification

  • Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust – Work experience opportunities in the Wellbeing Centre Salon, delivering treatments for NHS staff

How You’ll Be Assessed
You’ll be assessed through a mix of practical observations and theory tests:

  • Practical Assessments: We’ll observe your individual performance to check your skills and competency.

  • Theory Assessments: These include multiple-choice online exams, assignments, and work packs. All exams are marked externally by the awarding body, and your final grade will be a Pass.

  • Support to Succeed: You’ll take part in practical demos and knowledge sessions to help you prepare for assessments and exams with confidence.

Once completed, learners will be qualified to work as a beautician in a salon or can progress onto the following courses to further their career opportunities;

· Level 2 Diploma in Beauty

· Level 2 Diploma in Nails

· Level 2 Diploma in Barbering

· Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing
