The independence pathway is a 1-year programme dependent on the entry point of learner and previous post-16 study. Learners starting on the Independence Pathway will commonly have received SEND support at school, whether that be at a specialist SEND setting or within mainstream school provision. Learners who demonstrate their potential, desire and capacity to undertake cross college study, voluntary or paid work may progress onto the Employment Pathway after 1 year of study in independence. Potentially learners may also progress on to the Employment Pathway after completing the Independence Pathway or will be supported to explore appropriate exit routes to adult and community settings.
The core aims of the pathway include:
· Establishing support needs in FE and ensuring appropriate support is in place
· Establishing and maintaining positive relationships
· Developing independent living skills (travelling, personal care, community access and health and well-being, preparing meals, using household equipment, personal safety)
· Identifying own needs and accessing appropriate support
· Preparing for the future (living independently, adult services support, establishing external support networks, transitioning to employment pathway).
This course is for young people 16-18 and young people with an EHCP – up to the age of 25 years old.
