This course is ideal for adult learners who are already working in a teaching or training role in the post-16 sector and want to gain a full teaching qualification. It suits those in further education, adult and community learning, work-based learning, or offender education settings. It is also available for those looking to pursue a career teaching or training in Further Education.

This course is for those ready to commit to becoming confident, reflective, and qualified practitioners in further education. It blends academic study with practical classroom experience, supporting you to develop your professional identity and teaching toolkit.

You’ll need to balance written assignments, classroom delivery, and reflective practice, while engaging in feedback and mentoring. If you’re passionate about teaching and ready to grow, this could be your next step.

  • Learners should be in a teaching role or have access to a placement with at least 250 hours of teaching practice over the duration of the course – 150 hours of direct teaching and 100 hours of teaching related activity.
  • For Level 5 Cert Ed, applicants need to have a minimum L3 qualification in the subject they wish to teach.
  • For Level 6 Prof Grad Cert Ed a degree is required.
  • All applicants must also have L2 or GCSE in maths and English.
  • Level 3 AET qualification is recommended as a foundation for this course but is not essential. Students will be expected to teach online also so good IT skills will be important.

Once initial eligibility is confirmed, applicants will be required to:

  • Complete an online application via the University of Wolverhampton
  • Attend and pass a panel interview
  • Provide evidence of an appropriate teaching placement (if not already employed as an unqualified teacher)
  • Have access to a suitably qualified subject mentor
  • Undergo or hold an enhanced DBS check prior to starting the course

  • E-learning and subject specific studies
  • Professional development – this is a module that is completed in both years.

 

This course is delivered Fridays 9.30-3.30.

Learners will take part in peer observations, collaborative projects, and critical reflection activities to enrich their professional practice and build a supportive learning community.  We have guest lectures from authors and researchers and we visit the University campus regularly.  There are regular networking events held with partner colleges and the University of Wolverhampton and access to research presentation events and conferences.  Students have opportunity to present their research projects at these events too.

Assessment is through written assignments, research, presentations, practical teaching observations, reflective journals, and a professional teaching practice portfolio. Learners will be observed teaching at least 10 times over the course.

Graduates from can pursue QTLS status (Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills) through the Society for Education and Training.  Many students also complete their L3 Assessing Vocational Achievement and the L4 Leading Internal Quality Assurance qualifications.
