This qualification is for experienced assessors who are progressing into a Lead Internal Quality Assurer (IQA) role. It is designed for those responsible for coordinating and leading the quality assurance of assessment practice across a team of assessors in a training provider, college, or workplace setting.

Applicants must:

  • Hold a valid assessor qualification, such as the Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement
  • Be competent and experienced in their subject or vocational area and hold a minimum Level 3 qualification in the subject area.
  • Have access to at least two assessors, each working with at least two learners
  • Be working in or have a placement in a setting where they can carry out internal quality assurance duties
  • Have or be working at Level 2 in English and maths, and be confident using digital tools to manage documentation
  • Hold or apply for an enhanced DBS if working in an education or training setting with vulnerable groups

Without access to assessors and real IQA practice, the qualification cannot be completed.

Is This the Right Course for Me?

This course is suitable for assessors moving into a quality leadership role, or those already involved in standardising, sampling, and supporting assessment practice. You will need to be confident managing people and processes, upholding standards, and working with awarding organisations.

You should be comfortable leading professional discussions, giving constructive feedback, completing sampling plans, and ensuring compliance with internal and external quality assurance procedures.

Modules:

  • Understanding the Principles and Practices of Internally Assuring the Quality of Assessment
  • Internally Assure the Quality of Assessment
  • Plan, Allocate and Monitor Work in Your Own Area of Responsibility

Learners will benefit from tutor-led workshops, peer support, and other enrichment content exploring internal and external quality assurance, digital assessment tools, and inclusive practice. Students will visit the FabLab to explore innovative technology in assessment and experience guest lecturers when available.

You will be assessed through:

  • Written assignments and project work
  • Observation of your IQA practice in a live environment
  • Professional discussion and evaluation
  • A portfolio of evidence that includes quality assurance of two assessors, each assessing two learners
  • Documentation such as sampling plans, assessor records, feedback reports, and standardisation activities

Successful completion may lead to:

  • Senior quality assurance roles within training organisations or FE providers
  • Level 5 leadership and management qualifications
  • A broader portfolio of responsibilities across curriculum, compliance, and quality assurance
  • Becoming a recognised Lead IQA or nominee for awarding body inspections
  • Additional qualifications in teaching and training such as L5/6 Certificate in Education.
