Are you looking for an opportunity to earn while you learn? Then an apprenticeship could be for you! Apprenticeships at Sandwell College are a fantastic way to gain training and achieve nationally recognised qualifications whilst also earning a salary.

Students will be either paid National Minimum Apprenticeship wage or more, depending on the employer.

We offer a structured training programme for those in employment who want to learn and we work with employers to recruit apprentices seeking an apprenticeship placement in the Dental industry.

This course is ideal for:

  • School leavers looking to start a career in the Dental industry
  • Adults retraining or upskilling for Dental Nursing roles
  • Apprentices employed in a relevant trade seeking formal qualifications

 

A Level 3 Dental Nurse Apprenticeship offers a comprehensive blend of theoretical knowledge and practical experience, preparing you for a professional role in dental healthcare. Spanning approximately 18 months, this program culminates in eligibility for registration with the General Dental Council (GDC).

All students will get a dedicated assessor for the duration of the course.

The minimum entry requirements for this Level 3 Dental Nursing Advanced Apprenticeship are as follows;

  • English GCSE Grade 4/C, Level 2 Functional Skills, or equivalent
  • Mathematics GCSE Grade 4/C, Level 2 Functional Skills, or equivalent
  • Demonstrate a passion for the Dental industry
  • Be at least 16 years of age

If you’re 19+ and haven’t got those GCSE grades, please get in touch/apply anyway.

You will need to be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week in a relevant job but we can assist you in finding a placement. 

All roles meet or exceed the national apprenticeship wage of £7.55 up to age 19, or for the first year of training for all ages. After the first year, those 19+ will go up to the National Living Wage for their age. 

 

 

Throughout the apprenticeship, you’ll gain expertise in:

  • Dental Anatomy & Physiology: Understanding oral structures, as well as the respiratory and circulatory systems.
  • Infection Control: Learning about disease transmission, sterilisation procedures, and decontamination protocols.
  • Radiography: Grasping the principles of dental imaging, including safe handling and processing of radiographs.
  • Health & Safety: Comprehending legislation and best practices related to dental materials and workplace safety.
  • Communication Skills: Developing effective verbal and non-verbal communication techniques, ensuring patient confidentiality and consent.
  • Ethical & Legal Responsibilities: Familiarising yourself with GDC standards, safeguarding policies, and patient care ethics.
  • Medical Emergencies: Recognising and responding to emergencies, including proficiency in first aid and CPR.

 

You’ll also acquire hands-on skills such as:

  • Chairside Assistance: Supporting dentists during various procedures, including restorative and surgical treatments.
  • Material Preparation: Mixing and handling dental materials in accordance with manufacturers’ guidelines.
  • Patient Care: Monitoring and reassuring patients, ensuring their comfort and understanding throughout treatments.
  • Record Keeping: Maintaining accurate and confidential patient records, adhering to legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Infection Prevention: Implementing and managing effective infection control measures within the clinical environment.
  • Radiograph Processing: Assisting in the acquisition and processing of dental radiographs, ensuring compliance with safety standards.

Unit 306: Dental Radiography & Contributing to the production of dental images

Unit 307: Periodontal tissue treatment & Restorations

Unit 308: Oral health promotion and disease prevention

Unit 309: Endodontics

Unit 310: Minor Oral Surgery

Unit 311: Scientific and practical information to support the patient’s oral and physical health

  • Portfolio of Evidence: Documenting practical skills and experiences gained during the course.
  • Observations: Assessing competence in real or simulated clinical environments.
  • Written Assignments: Evaluating understanding of theoretical concepts.
  • Professional Discussions: Engaging in structured conversations to demonstrate knowledge and decision-making abilities.
  • Orthodontic Therapist: Assist in correcting teeth and jaw alignment. This role requires further qualifications and registration with the General Dental Council (GDC).
  • Dental Hygienist or Therapist: Focus on preventive care and treatment of gum diseases. These positions necessitate additional education and GDC registration.
  • Implant or Oral Surgery Nurse: Specialise in assisting with dental implant procedures or oral surgeries, requiring specific training.
  • Senior or Lead Dental Nurse: Manage a team of dental nurses, coordinate schedules, and ensure compliance with protocols.
  • Practice Manager: Oversee the administrative and operational aspects of a dental practice, including budgeting and staff management.
  • Dental Nurse Educator or Assessor: Train and assess aspiring dental nurses, often requiring teaching qualifications.
