Are you looking for an opportunity to earn while you learn? Then an apprenticeship could be for you! Apprenticeships at Sandwell College are a fantastic way to gain training and achieve nationally recognised qualifications whilst also earning a salary.

Students will be either paid National Minimum Apprenticeship wage or more, depending on the employer.

This course is suitable for:

  • Young people aged 16-18 who are interested in a hands-on career in a practical industry
  • Adults looking to retrain in the construction industry
  • Those in employment wanting to gain qualifications

This Level 2 Painting & Decorating Intermediate Apprenticeship programme lasts 24 months and you will play a key role in working within a construction environment where your duties could encompass many areas of painting and decorating, such as painting internal and external areas using a variety of wall covering products.

The minimum entry requirements for this Level 2 Painting & Decorating Intermediate Apprenticeship are as follows;

  • At least one Grade 2 and above in Maths and English
  • Demonstrate a passion for the Painting & Decorating industry
  • Be at least 16 years of age

 

This hands-on apprenticeship equips you with the essential skills and knowledge to become a confident and capable decorator, ready to transform spaces and bring design ideas to life.

You’ll learn how to prepare a variety of surfaces through filling, sanding, and priming, and develop expert techniques in applying paint by brush and roller to walls, ceilings, and woodwork. You’ll also gain experience in wallpapering and specialist decorative finishes to meet a wide range of client needs.

Training takes place in industry-standard workshops using professional tools and materials, with a strong focus on safety, including how to work safely with access equipment like ladders and mobile towers.

Work placements with local employers give you real-life experience, helping you apply your skills on the job while building vital transferable abilities such as teamwork, attention to detail, and problem-solving.

  • Principles of Construction, Information, and Communication
  • Preparing Surfaces for Decoration
  • Applying Paint Systems by Brush and Roller
  • Erecting Access Equipment and Platforms
  • Applying Foundation and Plain Papers
  • Producing Specialist Decorative Finishes
  • Estimating, Measuring, and Calculating Materials

 

On successful completion of the course, you will achieve the following qualifications:

  • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Decorative Finishing and Industrial Painting Occupations
  • Level 2 Diploma in Painting and Decorating
  • Functional Skills Maths Level 1
  • Functional Skills English Level 1
  • Employment Rights and Responsibilities
  • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills
  • Apprenticeship Achievement Certificate

  • Employer-led workshops (e.g., Dulux Academy session on colour theory)

  • Work placements with local decorating companies

All learners will have a dedicated trainer/assessor who will plan learning and assessments with you. The assessment methods used will include the following:

  • Practical assessments – Carried out in workshop-based environments with feedback and support from tutors
  • Written assessments – Including knowledge questions and assignments. Learners receive 1:1 guidance and tutorials
  • Online exam – Time-bound multiple-choice tests with revision sessions and mock exams offered in advance.  Learning support is available for those who need additional help with literacy, numeracy, or study skills.

An End Point Assessment will also be completed.

  • Self-employment as a sole trader or subcontractor
  • Decorating Specialist or Product Rep for paint manufacturers
  • Level 3 Diploma in Painting and Decorating
