This course equips learners with a comprehensive grasp of the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to become successful managers and leaders within a wide range of organisations and across a variety of employment sectors.

Flexi-Study delivery enables learners to  fit their  studies in around their work and personal life.  The Flexi-Study approach combines one day a month of face-to-face classroom teaching with independent distance learning,  using online, on-demand learning materials which are available 24/7.  Learners also have a dedicated tutor who is there to support them throughout their studies.

The course is for adult learners who are practising or aspiring middle or senior managers and leaders.  Learners on these courses are usually employed and work in a variety of management and leadership roles across a  range of organisations in the private, public and third sectors.

Unemployed learners with appropriate prior work experience and/or qualifications are also welcome to apply.

Course costs:

£2,100 in total. However, this course is fully funded for WMCA residents who fit the minimum entry criteria.

Course delivery:

The classes are delivered at the College’s ‘Tomorrow’s People’ centre at 13 Bennetts Hill in Birmingham City Centre. New Street Station and Snow Hill Station are only a few minutes’ walk away, and the area is well served by buses and trams.

The course runs for 8 months: 1 session per month on a Friday 9am – 5pm.

Online, on-demand learning materials are available 24/7 and are accessible by both PCs and mobile devices.

All learners are given FREE professional membership of the CMI, which includes access to a range of CMI products and services to support them throughout the qualification and later as they progress in their career.

A minimum of a CMI Level 3 Diploma in Principles of Management and Leadership or equivalent qualification and a  minimum of five GCSEs at grade C or above including English or equivalent qualifications.

However, mature applicants (over 21 years) with relevant work experience (paid and/or unpaid) may be able to join the course in lieu of  formal qualifications, subject to satisfactory performance at a selection interview.

Learners study seven units:-

  1. Principles of Management and Leadership in an Organisational Context: this unit enables learners to evaluate the impact of an organisation’s structure and governance on management and leadership, with an exploration of theoretical models, management and leadership styles and approaches.
  2. Principles of Developing, Managing and Leading Individuals and Teams to Achieve Success: this unit focusses on essential management and leadership skills, specifically approaches to managing individuals and teams, with an emphasis on supporting, motivating and inspiring individuals and teams to exceed expectations.
  3. Managing Projects to Achieve Results: this unit equips learners with the knowledge and skills required to manage projects successfully and overcome problems and challenges.
  4. Managing Change: this unit enables learners to develop the knowledge and skills needed to manage change and achieve set objectives, but to do so in a professional manner with open and honest communication throughout the process.
  5. Creating and Delivering Operational Plans: this unit focuses on the knowledge and skills required to create and deliver operational plans.
  6. Managing Finance: this unit enables learners to understand how financial systems within organisations operate and enhances their confidence and credibility in financial management.
  7. Using Reflective Practice to Inform Personal and Professional Development: this unit gives learners an understanding and appreciation of reflective practice and how this essential management tool can be used as the basis for meaningful personal and professional development.

 

Each learner automatically becomes a CMI member, gaining access to numerous benefits, including global networking opportunities, which significantly enhance their employment and career development prospects

All learners have access to CMI’s Career Development Centre (CDC), which provides tailored cutting-edge CPD and career resources free of charge.  Through the CDC, learners can use management diagnostic tools, receive personalised development plans, get instant CV and interview feedback and build skills with expert advice videos and interactive e-learning.

All  learners have the opportunity to connect with experienced managers and leaders for career guidance and support with improving their management and leadership skills, free of charge via the CMI Mentoring scheme These mentoring opportunities provide learners with a learning experience which elevates knowledge-sharing to a practical level.

Each unit is assessed by one written assignment of approximately 4,000 words.  Learners are supported with assignment completion via structured assignment workshops.  Learners are allowed three attempts at each assignment.

Progression opportunities include moving on to other CMI level 5 qualifications  for example ‘topping-up’ to a CMI Level 5 Extended Diploma in Management and Leadership or undertaking a CMI Level 5 Certificate in Project Management, CMI Level 5 Certificate/Diploma in Management Consulting or CMI Level 5 Online Bitesize courses in a range of cutting-edge management specialisms.

Other progression opportunities include moving on to CMI qualifications at a higher level, for example the CMI Level 7 Certificate in Strategic Management and Leadership.

Learners who are aspiring to work in a management role may be able to progress to jobs such as:-

  • Departmental Manager
  • Divisional Manager
  • Regional Manager
  • Operations Manager
  • Specialist Manager

Learners may also further their ongoing personal and professional development by applying for full membership (MCMI) or even Chartered Membership of the CMI (CMgr) – subject to meeting CMI eligibility criteria.
