This nationally recognised AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) qualification is perfect for adult learners who want to build practical bookkeeping skills that can lead to employment or further study. The course covers both manual and digital bookkeeping systems and is designed for those looking to work in finance, accounting, or self-employment roles.

You’ll study two key units that provide a strong foundation in double-entry bookkeeping and financial controls, with each contributing 50% to your final grade.

GCSE grade 4/C or above in English in Maths or Functional Skills Level 2 in English and Maths

Gain a solid understanding of how to set up and maintain accurate manual and digital bookkeeping systems. This unit introduces the principles of double-entry bookkeeping and the essential processes that support accurate financial record keeping.

Topics covered include:

  • Understanding how to set up bookkeeping systems

  • Processing customer transactions

  • Processing supplier transactions

  • Processing receipts and payments

  • Posting transactions into the ledger accounts

Assessment: This unit accounts for 50% of the final qualification grade.

Unit 2: Principles of Bookkeeping Controls

Building on the first unit, this module deepens your knowledge of financial controls and the reconciliation process. You’ll learn how to prepare and check control accounts, use journals to correct errors, and redraft trial balances after adjustments.

Topics covered include:

  • Using control accounts

  • Reconciling bank statements with the cash book

  • Using the journal to record and adjust transactions

  • Producing and correcting trial balances

Assessment: This unit accounts for 50% of the final qualification grade.

When you’re studying an AAT qualification, your knowledge and skills will be tested via computer-based assessments (CBAs).

Our CBAs are marked in one of three ways:

  • computer-marked, and so results will be available automatically
  • partially computer marked and partially human marked, and so results will be available within six weeks
  • human marked, and so results will be available within six weeks.

Successful completion can lead to:

  • AAT Level 3 Certificate in Bookkeeping

  • AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting

  • Entry-level roles such as Accounts Assistant, Finance Clerk or Bookkeeper
