Are you looking for an opportunity to earn while you learn? Then an apprenticeship could be for you! Apprenticeships at Sandwell College are a fantastic way to gain training and achieve nationally recognised qualifications whilst also earning a salary.

Students will be either paid National Minimum Apprenticeship wage or more, depending on the employer.

We offer a structured training programme for those in employment who want to learn and we work with employers to recruit apprentices seeking an Apprenticeship placement in the automotive industry.

This course is aimed at students with a previous Level 1 or 2 qualification within the industry and those currently in employment.

All students will get a dedicated assessor for the duration of the course.

The minimum entry requirements for this Level 3 Vehicle Damage Paint Technician Apprenticeship are as follows;

  • English GCSE Grade 4/C, Level 2 Functional Skills, or equivalent
  • Mathematics GCSE Grade 4/C, Level 2 Functional Skills, or equivalent
  • Demonstrate a passion for the motor vehicle industry
  • Be at least 16 years of age

You will need to be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week in a relevant job but we can assist you in finding a placement. 

All roles meet or exceed the national apprenticeship wage of £7.55 up to age 19, or for the first year of training for all ages. After the first year, those 19+ will go up to the National Living Wage for their age. 

This Level 3 Vehicle Damage Paint Technician Apprenticeship usually lasts 3 years and you will play a key role in working with cars, vans, motorcycles and larger vehicles which are damaged in accidents and will be taken to a body repair workshop where you will be employed.

As a technician, you will complete the process from start to finish, and in some cases, you may have specialised roles and work on one part of the repair process. This apprenticeship course will allow you to build a foundation of skills which are needed to be successful.

You will work through a variety of modules to gain the experience and skills needed to succeed as a vehicle damage paint technician. There are a wide range of units which you will study, and these include:

  • Health and safety
  • Tools & equipment
  • Preparation
  • plastic Preparation
  • Foundation applications
  • Top coat applications
  • Defect rectification
  • Masking applications
  • Colour matching

On successful completion of the course, you will achieve the following qualifications:

  • Level 3 Diploma in Accident Repair Paint Competence
  • Level 3 Diploma in Accident Repair Paint Principles
  • Functional Skills Maths Level 2
  • Functional Skills English Level 2
  • Functional Skills ICT Level 2
  • Employment Rights and Responsibilities
  • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills
  • Apprenticeship Achievement Certificate

All learners will have a dedicated trainer/assessor who will plan learning and assessments with you. The assessment methods used will include the following:

  • Observation and assessment in the workplace
  • Online exams
  • 1:1 professional discussion

You will attend college one day per week and you will receive regular workplace assessments which will assess competency. You will be required to sit a number of exams during the programme in addition to creating a portfolio of learning.

20% of the training will be delivered off the job and this can include:

Simulation, online learning or training from employers, shadowing, mentoring, industry visits, attendance at competitions and support in writing assignments.

Many of our apprentices progress within the organisation they do their apprenticeship with. But there are other progression routes:

  • Individuals can continue their education by progressing to a Foundation Degree or other higher education qualifications. 
  • Those interested in managing teams can pursue qualifications such as ILM (Institute of Leadership and Management) qualifications at Levels 2, 3, and 4.
