This course is designed for school leavers who want to begin their career as a healthcare support worker. It requires no specific previous skills or knowledge so is perfect for beginners. The course is designed to prepare you for entry-level roles such as Healthcare Assistant or Healthcare Support Worker, giving you the core clinical, practical and personal skills needed to work across a range of settings, including hospitals, care homes and community healthcare teams.

You will develop industry-relevant knowledge through practical, real-world topics such as communication in healthcare, physiological measurements, infection prevention and control, and person-centred care. You will also develop important transferable skills, including teamwork, communication, professionalism, problem-solving and confidence, which are valued by employers across the health and social care sector.

GCSE Grade 3 including both Maths and English Language.

You will develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to work safely and effectively in health and social care settings. You will explore communication, handling information, personal development, person-centred care, equality and inclusion, health and safety, safeguarding, duty of care and the responsibilities of a care worker.

The course also covers practical and important areas of care, including taking physiological measurements, supporting nutritional and hydration needs, and understanding mental health, autism spectrum condition, dementia and end-of-life care. You will develop valuable transferable skills such as communication, teamwork, empathy and professionalism, helping prepare you for employment as a Healthcare Assistant or Support Worker and for further study.

Students on this course will have access to the newly re-furbished hospital and sociall space, fitted with essential equipment at the Sandwell College campus. Students also have access to the Learning Campus, Sandwell College’s brand-new education facility located on the site of the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital.

Students on this course will benefit from enrichment opportunities including Autism Awareness, Dementia Walks, Sexual Health Talks, Mental Health and Wellbeing sessions and NHS Cadets Training, giving opportunities to build confidence, develop practical skills and gain insight into careers across the health and social care sector.
