Understand how children develop, grow and learn with this engaging four-week taster course delivered at Cradley Heath Skills Campus. You’ll explore the key developmental milestones from birth onwards, understand how children’s physical, emotional and social skills emerge, and learn simple strategies to support their growth at home.

This course is perfect for parents, carers or adults who want to build confidence supporting their own children or who are curious about exploring early years or education roles in the future. Every session focuses on real-life examples and practical approaches that help you understand children’s needs in clear, achievable ways.

Who is this course for?

Ideal for adults aged 19+ who want to:
• Understand childhood development and key milestones
• Support their child’s learning, wellbeing and growth
• Learn practical techniques for the home environment
• Explore future early years or support roles
• Build confidence before returning to study

No childcare experience needed.

• You must be aged 19+
• Fully funded for most adults living in the West Midlands Combined Authority area

Across four weekly sessions, you will explore:
• The main stages of child development from birth onwards
• How children learn through interaction, routine and play
• Emotional, social, physical and cognitive development
• Techniques for supporting confidence, behaviour and communication
• Everyday activities that promote healthy growth and learning

Learning is hands-on, engaging and based on real family situations.

You will attend one session per week. There are no exams, assessment is based on short activities, discussions and tutor feedback that help you apply new skills immediately.
