Develop strong, versatile English skills for work, further study and everyday life with this 14-week Functional Skills English Level 2 course at Cradley Heath Skills Campus.
Level 2 English is widely recognised by employers, apprenticeship providers and training programmes as equivalent to a GCSE grade 4 (C), making it an essential qualification for adults wanting to progress in their career or education. You’ll learn how to read and understand a wide range of texts, write detailed and structured content accurately, and communicate confidently in discussions or presentations.

Who is this course for?

This course is ideal for adults aged 19+ who want to:

  • Gain a nationally recognised English qualification equivalent to GCSE
  • Strengthen their reading, writing, speaking and listening for work or further study
  • Improve their communication skills in professional and everyday situations
  • Prepare for employment, apprenticeships or higher-level courses
  • Develop the confidence to succeed in academic or workplace settings

Completion of Level 1 or equivalent experience is beneficial but not required.

Across 14 weekly sessions, you’ll develop advanced practical English skills, including:

  • Reading and analysing a wide range of texts – letters, reports, articles, emails, instructions and more
  • Writing clear, structured and accurate content for work and life, including formal and informal texts
  • Using grammar, punctuation and vocabulary effectively to express meaning and detail
  • Taking part in discussions, giving opinions and listening actively to others
  • Planning, drafting and proofreading written work with greater accuracy

Learning focuses on real-life tasks that prepare you for work, training and everyday communication.

You’ll attend two weekly sessions at Cradley Heath Skills Campus. Assessment is practical and ongoing, based on everyday reading, writing and speaking tasks. Your tutor will guide you through each stage with supportive feedback to help you build confidence and achieve the Level 2 standard.

Achieving Functional Skills English Level 2 opens doors to a wide range of opportunities, including:

  • Employment or career progression routes
  • Access to apprenticeships, professional training or vocational qualifications
  • Higher-level study, including access courses
  • Further adult education programmes offered at Cradley Heath

This qualification also strengthens everyday communication skills, helping you feel more confident and independent in work, family life and the community.
