Functional Skills Level 1 English

However, you will need to have an initial assessment if you do not have any prior qualifications to help us plan your individual learning program. Before enrolling on the course, you must complete an initial assessment in English, which will include a reading and a writing task. This assessment ensures that you are placed in the appropriate level of the course for your success and allows us to identify any support you may need.

What you’ll gain:

  • Clear and confident communication skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing
  • The ability to take part in formal discussions, express opinions, and adapt language for different audiences and situations
  • Improved reading and comprehension of a range of texts, including articles, reports, and persuasive writing
  • Strong writing skills, including spelling, grammar, punctuation, and the ability to structure written work for different purposes
  • Preparation for further education, higher-level qualifications, apprenticeships, or skilled employment
  • A nationally recognised qualification, equivalent to GCSE Grade 4 (C), accepted by employers and educational institutions across the UK

Our supportive tutors will guide you throughout the course with targeted practice, personalised feedback, and mock assessments to help you feel confident and prepared. You will complete the official Pearson Edexcel Functional Skills Level 2 English assessments in reading, writing, and speaking & listening, based on real-life and workplace scenarios.

Throughout the year, we take great pride in providing a diverse range of enrichment activities. These include:

  • Our One World event which celebrates different faiths and cultures
  • Residential trips
  • Day excursions to various UK cities
  • Theatre outings
  • Visits to local museums
  • Guest speakers covering topics like Sexual Health, Sports, Well-being, Finances, Safety and Volunteering.

You will be assessed in three main areas:

  1. Reading (1hr 15min) and Writing (1hr) – Both are external exams.

  2. Speaking, Listening & Communicating – Assessed through two internal tasks:

You will receive full support from your tutor, including practice activities, feedback, revision resources, and one-to-one help where needed. Continuous assessment throughout the year ensures you’re ready for the final exams.

After successful completion of Functional Skills Level 2 English, learners can progress to GCSE English qualifications, vocational courses, apprenticeships, or employment opportunities that require improved communication skills. This qualification provides a solid foundation for further education and enhances essential skills for everyday life and the workplace.
