This Functional Skills Level 1 Maths course is designed for adult learners who want to improve their practical maths skills for everyday life, work, or further study. It is ideal for:

  • Adults returning to education who need to build confidence with numbers and problem-solving.
  • Job seekers looking to meet entry requirements for employment, apprenticeships, or vocational training.
  • Employees who want to strengthen their maths skills for the workplace, such as handling data, budgets, or measurements.
  • Learners preparing for further qualifications, including GCSE Maths, Functional Skills Level 2 Maths or higher-level technical courses.
  • Individuals looking to manage personal finances and develop numeracy skills useful in real-life situations.

This course helps learners gain a solid grasp of fundamental mathematical skills and apply them to real-world problems with confidence and accuracy. It is especially suited to those who want to develop logical thinking, improve decision-making, and understand the role of maths in everyday life and the world of work.

However, you will need to have an initial assessment if you do not have any prior Maths qualifications to help us plan your individual learning program. This assessment ensures that you are placed in the appropriate level of the course for your success and allows us to identify any support you may need.

A short assessment and a discussion with a teacher are required if you do not hold Entry 3 Maths to determine the learner’s level.

What you’ll gain:
• Improved skills in using numbers, decimals, fractions, and percentages accurately
• Confidence in applying maths to real-life tasks like budgeting, shopping, and measuring
• Ability to interpret and create tables, charts, and graphs to present information clearly
• Understanding of shapes, perimeter, area, volume, and simple calculations
• Skills to solve everyday problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
• Practice in estimating, rounding, and checking calculations for accuracy
• Preparation for the official Pearson Edexcel Functional Skills Level 1 Maths assessments, which are widely recognised by employers and educational institutions across the UK.

Throughout the year, we take great pride in providing a diverse range of enrichment activities. These include:

  • Our One World event which celebrates different faiths and cultures
  • Residential trips
  • Day excursions to various UK cities
  • Theatre outings
  • Visits to local museums
  • Guest speakers covering topics like Sexual Health, Sports, Well-being, Finances, Safety and Volunteering.

At Functional Skills Level 1 Maths, you will be assessed through a timed, externally marked exam. The assessment typically includes:

  • Paper 1: Non-calculator section
  • Paper 2: Calculator-allowed section

The assessment evaluates not only your ability to carry out calculations but also your reasoning, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. You will be expected to demonstrate clear working methods, appropriate approaches, and accurate results.

Your exam will be marked externally by Pearson Edexcel to ensure fairness and consistency, and you’ll receive feedback to help you understand your strengths and areas for improvement.

Throughout the course, tutors provide support with practice questions, mock exams, and personalised guidance to help you prepare confidently for the assessment.

Additionally, tutors will assess learners continuously throughout the academic year to best prepare learners for the formal exams.

After successful completion of Functional Skills Level 1 Maths, learners can progress to Level 2 Functional Skills Maths, GCSE Maths qualifications, vocational courses, apprenticeships, or employment opportunities. This qualification provides a solid foundation for further education and enhances essential skills for everyday life and the workplace.
