This Functional Skills Level 1 English course is designed for adult learners who want to develop practical English skills for everyday life, work, or further education. It is suitable for:

  • Adults preparing for employment or apprenticeships, where a nationally recognised English qualification is often required.
  • Learners returning to education, who want to build confidence before progressing to Level 2 Functional Skills or GCSE English.
  • Employees looking to improve workplace communication, including reading, writing emails or reports, and participating in discussions.
  • ESOL learners (English for Speakers of Other Languages) with basic English skills who are ready for a formal qualification.
  • Adults seeking personal development, such as parents supporting their children’s learning or individuals aiming to improve their literacy for everyday tasks.

There are no formal qualifications required.

Before enrolling on the course, you must complete an initial assessment in English, which will include a reading and a writing task. This assessment ensures that you are placed in the appropriate level of the course for your success and allows us to identify any support you may need.

What you’ll gain:
• Improved skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening
• Confidence using English in real-life and work-related situations
• Ability to understand and communicate clearly through spoken and written English
• Preparation for further study, employment, or vocational training with a nationally recognised qualification

Throughout the year, we take great pride in providing a diverse range of enrichment activities. These include:

  • Our One World event which celebrates different faiths and cultures
  • Residential trips
  • Day excursions to various UK cities
  • Theatre outings
  • Visits to local museums
  • Guest speakers covering topics like Sexual Health, Sports, Well-being, Finances, Safety and Volunteering.

At Functional Skills Level 1 English, you will be assessed in three areas: Reading, Writing, and Speaking, Listening & Communicating.

  • Reading and Writing are assessed through separate, timed; the reading exam tests your ability to understand and interpret different texts, while the writing exam evaluates your ability to write clearly and accurately for various purposes.

Reading exam – 1 hour

Writing exam – 1 hour

  • Speaking, Listening & Communicating assessment is conducted internally by your tutor and involves two tasks:

Task 1 requires giving a 3–4 minute talk to a small group followed by a 2-minute Q&A, including responding to and asking relevant questions.

Task 2 is a 10-minute formal discussion where you express opinions, adapt your contributions to the audience and purpose, and respect turn-taking. Each task assesses specific criteria, with some requiring at least two examples of evidence from you.

Your tutor will prepare you with targeted practice, personalised feedback, and revision resources like quizzes and mock exams. One-to-one support is available for areas needing extra help, including exam techniques. For speaking and listening, your tutor will guide you through the process to ensure you understand the expectations and feel confident. This support helps you be fully prepared to succeed in your Functional Skills Level 1 English assessments.

Additionally, tutors will assess learners continuously throughout the academic year to best prepare learners for the formal exams.

The qualification will be awarded as a pass or a fail.

After successful completion of Functional Skills Level 1 English, learners can progress to:

  • Level 2 Functional Skills English
  • GCSE English qualifications
  • Vocational courses
  • Apprenticeships
  • Employment opportunities that require improved communication skills.

This qualification provides a solid foundation for further education and enhances essential skills for everyday life and the workplace.
