At Entry Level 1 Functional Skills Maths for ESOL learners, you will take two short, practical maths exams at the end of the course to show what you have learned. Each exam usually lasts about 30 to 40 minutes and includes simple, real-life questions. The exams cover:

  • Non-calculator exam: counting and comparing numbers, adding and subtracting, recognising shapes, measuring, telling time, and basic data concepts
  • Calculator exam: using a calculator to solve problems involving money, measurements, and simple calculations
  • Topics include counting numbers up to 100, using money (coins and notes), reading clocks and calendars, measuring length, weight, and capacity, understanding position words like “in,” “on,” and “next to,” and interpreting basic information such as “more,” “less,” or “the same”

The questions are written in clear, simple English, and support is available to help you understand the instructions if needed. Your tutor will explain how and when to use a calculator in the calculator exam. Throughout the course, you will receive lots of support, including regular practice, help with maths vocabulary, one-to-one assistance if needed, and practice tests to build your confidence.
