The qualification of Digital Skills for Work – Level 2 reflects the latest government thinking on basic digital skills and the Basic Digital Skills Framework.

This qualification is designed to support learners to develop the digital skills that will support them in getting into work and performing their job roles effectively. While they can easily be offered as stand-alone bite-sized awards, the new qualifications could also be usefully combined with other units or qualifications into meaningful packages of learning.  For example:

Learners for whom English is not their first language who are seeking to improve their employability prospects might combine an ESOL qualification with a Digital Skills for Work Award. This course is designed for adults, including immigrants, refugees, asylum seekers, and members of settled minority communities who are adjusting to life in an English-speaking country. Whether you want to improve your digital skills for work, social interaction, or personal development, the course supports your goals. It also promotes social integration and provides a pathway to further education and employment.

Learners having the following skills before enrolling on the Level 2 qualification would be beneficial:

  • turning on a device (including entering and updating any account information safely, such as a password)
  • using the available controls on a device (such as a mouse and keyboard for a computer, or touchscreen on a smartphone or tablet)
  • making use of accessibility tools (including assistive technology) to make devices easier to use (such as changing display settings to make content easier to read)
  • interacting with the home screen on a device
  • connecting to the internet (including Wi-Fi) safely and securely, and opening a browser
  • opening and accessing an application on a device.

Gateway Qualifications – Level 2 in Digital Skills for Work is for learners who want to be equipped with the digital skills that will be useful to them in a work context, including handling information, creating and editing digital content, and communicating using digital skills.  Learners will also learn how to operate safely and responsibly online or when using digital devices, and how to be proactive in solving technical problems.

The unit has 5 outcomes:

  • Be able to use digital skills to handle work-related information.
  • Be able to create and edit digital content for work-related purposes.
  • Be able to use digital skills to communicate in a work context.
  • Be able to work online and use digital devices safely and responsibly in a work context.
  • Be able to solve technical problems.
