This course is ideal for adults who are new to teaching or training in the post-16 Further Education sector. It’s suitable for those who are considering a career in education, workplace training, or adult learning and want to gain a recognised qualification to get started.  The qualification is suitable for those who work or want to work as:

  • Teachers in the further education and skills sector, including adult and community education, work-based learning and the voluntary sector, provided they are qualified/experienced in the subject they intend to teach.
  • Technicians and support staff in further and adult education.
  • Training personnel in commerce, industry, the public sector, the uniformed services or HM Forces.

The course offers an excellent foundation to teaching and training and progression to becoming a qualified lecturer in the sector.

Applicants must:

  • Have good written and spoken English (usually at Level 2 or above)
  • Have good maths skills (usually at Level 2 or above)
  • Be able to write at Level 2 standard or above
  • Good IT skills
  • Have a minimum Level 3 qualification in the subject they wish to teach.

A formal teaching placement is not required.

The cost of this course is £400 (support available).

Course summary:

  • Learn the basics of teaching, training, and assessment
  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of a teacher/trainer
  • Explore inclusive teaching strategies and how to support diverse learners
  • Gain confidence in planning and delivering engaging sessions
  • Reflect on your own approach to learning and teaching

Modules:

  • Understanding Roles, Responsibilities and Relationships in Education and Training
  • Understanding and Using Inclusive Teaching and Learning Approaches
  • Understanding Assessment in Education and Training

Course delivery:

The course will be delivered over three hours per week, over a 16-week period, on Wednesdays 6-9PM.

Opportunities for shadowing or informal teaching may also be discussed. We also use Virtual Reality headsets and visit FabLab to explore technology in teaching and learning.

Assessment is through:

  • Completion of written assignments and reflective tasks
  • Remote presentation
  • A practical micro-teach session delivered to your peers (20–30 minutes)
  • Observation and peer feedback on your delivery
  • Completion of a portfolio of evidence

Successful learners can progress to:

  • Level 5 or 6 Certificate in Education and Training (with a teaching placement)
  • L3 Assessing Vocational Achievement qualifications, if working in vocational training
  • L2 Mentoring
  • Employment or voluntary roles in education, training, or support
  • Further subject-specific qualifications to support career goals
