Sports Coaching and Sports Development is a rapidly growing specialism within the sports industry, thanks largely to the additional investment and increased awareness in recent years. The course is designed for students who are preparing for future employment in the Sports industry, particularly in Coaching Development. Due to its multi-disciplinary approach, it also offers an opportunity to explore a number of disciplines within the Leisure industry, such as marketing. Students are supported to undertake relevant work experiences in order to gain relevant industry exposure.
You will need 64 UCAS Points or MPP Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport/Sport Exercise Science, plus five GCSEs at Grade 4/C or above (or equivalent) that should include a form of Mathematics and English. All applicants will be invited to interview.
The HND adopts a multi-disciplinary approach to the study of Sports Coaching and Development and focuses on the theoretical and practical aspects of Sports Coaching, the organisation and structure of Sports Development.
In addition, the HND in Sports qualification develops students’ personal skills enabling them to become independent learners who can progress on to the final stages of a degree course and employment. Also, students will develop their ability to effectively plan, deliver and manage coaching sessions and events through the extensive work exposure throughout the course.
HNC Year 1 – Physical Activity, Lifestyle & Health, The Sport Landscape, Project Management, Outdoor Learning, Inclusive Sport, Sport Marketing Work Exposure, Experiential Learning.
HND Year 2 – Work Experience, Advanced Coaching, Performance Analysis, Research Project, Events Management, Entrepreneurism in Sport, Coaching Special Populations.
You will carry out your own practical research in fully equipped sports science laboratories. You will also have the opportunity to experience top level coaching first-hand with trips to St George’s Park and Manchester City, and overseas trips to Club La Santa in Spain and Goa, where you’ll assist in coaching disadvantaged children at the Mango Tree Trust.
You can expect to develop your coaching practice alongside some of the finest coach developers, gaining recognised UKCC coaching qualifications. We’ll also help you build industry links with leading sports organisations such as Street Games and Benson Community where you will be given the chance to develop and manage your own sports development projects.
On completion of the HND, students can enrol on the final year of a BA Sports Studies or BSc Sports Coaching Degree at the University of Wolverhampton.
