Who is this course for?

The qualification provides an introduction for those new to teaching and training or those wishing to teach or train. It is designed as a qualification, which will equip a wide range of teachers and facilitators with the basics they need to teach. It does not entitle candidates to teach in the sector, but it is an entry qualification which allows progression to the Certificate in Education and Training and/or the Diploma in Education and Training.

The qualification is suitable for those who work or want to work as:

  • Teachers in the further education and skills sector, including adult and community education, work-based learning and the voluntary sector, provided they are qualified/experienced in the subject they intend to teach.
  • Technicians and support staff in further and adult education.
  • Training personnel in commerce, industry, the public sector, the uniformed services or HM Forces.

You must be qualified or experienced in the subject you intend to teach. Admission is by interview.

The qualification is designed to enable candidates to:

  • Understand the role and responsibilities of a teacher and the relationship between different professionals in education and training
  • Understand and use inclusive teaching and learning approaches in education and training.
  • Understand assessment in education and training.

The Award comprises three units, listed above, with a total value of 12 credits. It will consist of 48 contact and 48 non-contact hours. The course will be delivered over three hours per week over a 16-week period.

Assessment methods include written work, completion of reflective journals and delivery of a micro-teach, although this list is not exhaustive.

This qualification allows progression to the Certificate in Education and Training and/or the Diploma in Education and Training.
