Date 8 November 2018

My.Self – a new photography book by Michelle Sank

Launch event at Sandwell College, Spon Lane, West Bromwich – Thursday 8 November, 4 pm to 6 pm

A two-year project comes to an end this year as photographer, Michelle Sank, completes her work on My.Self  which has been showcased in a brand new publication commissioned and produced by Multistory.

At the launch event there’ll be performances by students and food and refreshments. If you would like to attend, please call 0121 569 2881 and you’ll be sent access information.

Michelle has created a photographic portrait of young people who are forming their identities and presenting their sense of themselves about who they are through their clothes, make-up, hairstyles and their gender. The book combines Michelle’s portraits with a representation of a questionnaire that serves as a record of their thoughts and opinions.

The project explored how young people navigate this complex stage of self-awareness and how culture and faith might influence their sense of self. Michelle met with young people in youth clubs, LGBTQ groups, outdoor spaces and further education colleges as well as more informally on the streets and in cafés. All of the people who agreed to engage in the project and participate in the process were asked how they wanted to present themselves in their portrait. They were asked to consider the particularities and specifics of their clothes and make-up and then photographed where they felt most at ease.

My.Self  is a partnership project with Multistory and Creative Black Country (as part of the Arts Council of England’s Creative People and Places Programme). Multistory is supported by Sandwell Council and Arts Council England.
